I caught this thread today and it really hit home. Building a PC on a strict $400 budget is basically a sport at this point. I remember my first build back in the day... I spent weeks staring at prices and felt like I was losing my mind every time a part went up by twenty bucks. It is stressful, especially when you are trying to do something nice for your nephew. You definitely want to be cautious with what you add to your browser. I would suggest keeping a few things in mind to stay safe:

Only ever install stuff directly from the official Chrome Web Store. If a site tells you to download a file to get a price tracker, run away.

Honey is probably the most user-friendly one out there. Since it is owned by PayPal, it is a lot more legit than most. It has a Droplist feature where you just click a button and it watches the price for you.

If you use Amazon, Keepa is the gold standard, but I totally get why the graphs look like a mess. You might want to consider just using their email alert feature and ignoring the rest of the clutter.

Be sure to check the permissions when you install anything. If an extension asks to read and change data on every single website you visit, that is a red flag. It should usually only need access to shopping sites. It is gonna be a great gift tho, so try not to stress too much. Just take it one part at a time. If you need help picking specific parts for that $400 limit, feel free to ask. I have seen some decent budget builds lately that really stretch those dollars.

Are there any reliable free price alert extensions for Chrome that actually work and wont give my computer a virus? I am trying to find a gift for my nephews 16th birthday next month and I have to be really careful with my money because I only have a budget of about $400 for his whole computer build. I live in rural Ohio so I cant just drive to a big store like Micro Center or whatever they are called so I have to buy everything online and the prices are driving me crazy. One minute the part I want is $150 and the next it is $220 and I feel like I am playing a losing game trying to catch the low price.

I keep hearing people talk about extensions but I honestly have no idea what those even are or how to install them safely. Is it just a button you click? I am so worried about downloading something that is going to spy on me or steal my credit card info when I buy the parts. I saw some things like CamelCamelCamel or Keepa or something like that but they look really complicated with all those graphs and charts and I just want something simple that tells me 'hey the price is low now go buy it' without me having to check every hour.

Sorry if this is a really dumb thing to ask but I am just so confused and a little bit anxious about the whole thing because I dont want to let my nephew down on his big day. Are there any of these that are actually free and safe for someone who doesnt know much about computers? I dont want to slow down my laptop either because it is already kind of old. I just need a little bell or something to pop up when it goes back down. If anyone has a suggestion for something very easy to use that would be great...
