S24 Ultra experiences pixel flickering and a white screen when the display turns on

Hi Guys,

I noticed flickering between the clock and front facing camera on the lock screen when the screen turns on, and I also get a bright  white screen. The service guy mentioned this happens because the light detection sensor is functioning.

Is this normal, or did he mislead me about having a defective unit?

stumbled on this and honestly its ridiculous. i just dropped a fortune on this phone and i am seeing the exact same flickering on my Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra too. i spent all night yesterday trying to dig into the developer settings and checking the refresh rate transitions because i refuse to believe a flagship would ship like this. i even tried to diy a fix by adjusting the brightness curves with a third party app but nothing stops that weird white flash when the panel wakes up. its honestly such a scam that we pay over a grand for supposedly premium hardware and then get told its just a sensor doing its job. total nonsense. quality control has gone down the drain while prices keep climbing every year. i used to love the tech in these displays but lately it feels like we are just beta testers for unfinished products. my old Sony Xperia 1 V never had these kinds of panel uniformity issues. its just frustrating when you know the specs are top tier on paper—like the high nit peak brightness and the ltpo switching—but the actual execution is so sloppy. maybe i should have gone with the OnePlus+12+5G&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">OnePlus 12 5G instead... companies really dont care once they have your money.

Yo! That sounds super annoying but also kinda interesting from a tech perspective lol. Quick question tho—does this flicker happen mostly when youre in a dark room or does it blast you with that white screen even when youre outside in the sun? Honestly i have been obsessing over display tech for a while now and here is the deal: Samsung puts the proximity and light sensors directly under the pixels on these newer models. To see through the screen, the display basically has to create a tiny window or flash to let light hit the sensor behind the glass. Its a total trade-off for having almost zero bezels! I love the edge-to-edge look but sometimes the hardware just acts quirky like that. If it is driving you crazy though, you might want to look at something with a totally different panel setup. I have been playing around with the OnePlus+12+5G+512GB&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">OnePlus 12 5G 512GB lately and the display calibration is just fantastic, plus it feels so smooth! Another solid one is the Motorola+Edge+Plus+2023&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Motorola Edge Plus 2023 which has been super reliable for me and doesnt have that weird strobe thing happening. Seriously hope you get it sorted because a flagship should feel perfect!

To add to the point above: I agree that the service guy sounds sketchy because I am literally dealing with the exact same thing on my Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and it is driving me nuts. I have been trying to ignore it for like three weeks now but I am still no closer to finding a real answer.

  • my old iPhone+15+Pro&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Apple iPhone 15 Pro never had this weird strobe effect
  • the transition from the AOD to the lock screen looks totally broken compared to a Google Pixel 8
  • the white flash happens even in a dark room where the sensor should be idle I would suggest being really careful about believing that tech because honestly it feels like a genuine hardware defect or a messy driver issue. Still havent found a fix and it is beyond frustrating for a phone that costs this much.

Checking if there's a software update available for your device, as sometimes these behaviors are optimized in newer versions.

@Sa9,

I will check for any software updates and see if that helps. If the issue persists after updating, do you think it could still be related to the sensor, or should I push for a hardware replacement?

@victor-anthony Ask your Service guy again.
