Does the Pixel 9a support magnetic MagSafe-style cases and accessories?

I’m thinking about picking up the Pixel 9a when it drops, but I’ve become really attached to the MagSafe ecosystem on my current phone. I use a magnetic car mount and a snap-on wallet daily, so I’m curious if Google has finally added built-in magnets for the 'a' series or if the Qi charging coil is positioned well for magnetic rings. I've seen some rumors about the 9a having a flush camera bar, which might make those stick-on magnetic adapters fit better than on previous models. Has anyone seen confirmed specs on this? I really want to know if I can keep using my existing magnetic accessories or if I'll need to hunt for a specific Magsafe-compatible case.

Honestly, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if your waiting for Google to finally bake magnets into the hardware, you're gonna be pretty disappointed. Based on my experience with the 'a' series, Google keeps things basic to hit that lower price point. I've been tracking the leaks for the Google Pixel 9a and unfortunately, there is zero evidence of a built-in magnetic ring. It sucks because basically every other manufacturer is leaning into Qi2 now, but Google is still lagging behind.

I had issues with the Google Pixel 8a trying to use those adhesive rings, and tbh, it was a mess. The coil alignment is always a bit funky. If the rumors about the flush camera bar on the Google Pixel 9a are true, it'll actually make things easier for cases, but you'll 100% still need a specific Magsafe-compatible case to use your wallet and car mount.

Here is what I recommend for when it actually drops:
- Look for a Mous MagSafe Compatible Case for Pixel 9a - they're pricey (usually $60+) but the magnets are seriously strong.
- Or go with a Spigen Ultra Hybrid MagFit Case for Pixel 9a for a better value proposition at around $25.
- If you want to keep your current case, maybe try the ESR HaloLock Universal Ring 360, but align it carefully or your phone will get sooo hot while charging.

Anyway, it's not as good as expected from a 2025 phone, but yeah... you'll definitely need that extra gear to keep your ecosystem working. gl!

Curious about one thing: what's the wattage on your current car mount? Honestly, if you're looking for value, sticking with a ESR Universal MagSafe Ring 360 on a cheap TPU case is way more cost-effective than buying a specialized Mous MagSafe Compatible Case. But yeah, I gotta know if your gear is high-wattage cuz that really affects how the magnets hold up under heat. lmk!

Just sharing my experience: I went through this last year with the previous gen, and tbh, the Qi coil alignment is the real deal-breaker. Even if the Google Pixel 9a has a flush back, the induction coil has to be centered for those magnets to actually work without overheating the phone. I've tried the Magsafe Magnetic Ring Adapter vs. just getting a dedicated Mous MagSafe Compatible Case. The stick-on rings are okay, but they *literally* always peel off after a month of car mount use. A dedicated case is way more solid.

TL;DR: Built-in magnets are unlikely, so a dedicated MagSafe case is basically mandatory for a secure grip.

I'm in the exact same boat as you, honestly. Been thinking about this all day because I really dont want to give up my magnetic wallet when I upgrade. I've dealt with this on my old 7a and let me tell you, you gotta be careful with the alignment or you'll just end up cooking your battery or getting zero charge. If you're going the DIY route, I would suggest getting something like the Sinjimoru Universal Magnet Plate and actually mounting it on the inside of a very thin TPU case. It looks way cleaner than having a ring stuck on the back that eventually peels off. Just make sure to test the charging induction before you permanently stick anything down. You might also want to consider the Mophie Snap Adapter since it's a bit more reliable than the cheap generic ones I've found. Just a heads up though, if the 9a ends up having that flush camera bar, any extra thickness from the magnets inside the case might make it wobble on a flat table. Definitely something to keep an eye on once the actual dimensions are out.

Tbh, since it’s basically confirmed we aren't getting native magnets, I’ve been looking at this from a DIY modding angle. I usually prefer to manually tweak my setups because off-the-shelf solutions for the 'a' series are always kinda hit or miss. Before you pull the trigger on the 9a, I gotta know a few things to see if a DIY approach even makes sense for you: * Are you planning on running a super thin skin where you’d have to mount the magnets externally, or are you okay with a thicker case that gives you room to maybe embed something on the inside?
* How much do you care about the charging speed versus just having a secure grip for your car mount? Knowing your DIY comfort level helps because getting the alignment perfect on a brand-new chassis without a guide is always a bit of a project. If you're willing to put in the work to measure the coil exactly, you can usually get a better result than any generic case.
