Which screen protector works best with the Pixel 9 fingerprint sensor?

I just pre-ordered the Pixel 9 and I'm really excited to get it in hand, but I'm a bit nervous about the screen protector situation. I’ve had issues in the past where tempered glass completely ruined the fingerprint unlock experience on older Pixel models, making it super laggy or requiring multiple attempts to get in. Since the Pixel 9 is rumored to have a new ultrasonic sensor, I want to make sure I buy something that is actually compatible and won't kill the responsiveness.

I’m specifically looking for a high-quality tempered glass option rather than a flimsy film, as I tend to be a bit clumsy. My budget is around $20-$40, and I’ve been looking at brands like Spigen and Whitestone Dome, but I’m seeing mixed reviews about which ones maintain that 'instant unlock' feel. Has anyone had a chance to test any specific brands yet, or did Google release an official recommendation? I really want to protect this display without sacrificing the convenience of the biometric sensor. Does anyone have a specific brand or model they’ve already tried that works flawlessly with the new sensor?

Ok so, I totally get the anxiety about the Pixel 9 screen protector situation. I've been there with the older optical sensors and it was literally a nightmare. But honestly, the new ultrasonic sensor in the Google Pixel 9 is a game changer. It's way more forgiving than the old tech, but you still gotta be careful with the glass thickness. I've spent way too much time testing this stuff lol, so here's what I've found so far:

1. Whitestone Dome Glass Screen Protector for Pixel 9 - This is basically the gold standard if you don't mind the liquid dispersion install. It's a bit of a process, but because the UV resin fills the gaps between the glass and the screen, the ultrasonic waves pass through perfectly. I'm satisfied with the 'instant' unlock feel here, no lag at all.

2. Spigen Glas.tR EZ Fit for Google Pixel 9 - If you want something easier to install, this is it. It's a dry application with a tray. It works well, but i think you might notice a TINY bit more pressure is needed compared to bare glass. Still, for the price, it's a solid win and definitely fits your $20-$40 budget.

Basically, the ultrasonic sensor actually prefers the full-adhesive bond of the Whitestone, but Spigen is totally fine for most people. Just make sure you re-register your fingerprints AFTER you put the glass on!! That's like the most important step tbh. Anyway, hope that helps you decide... good luck with the new phone!! 👍

Just sharing my experience: I went through this exact same headache last year with my Pixel 8 Pro. I'm a bit of a nerd for specs, so I spent hours researching how glass thickness affects ultrasonic pulses. While Spigen was mentioned, I actually found that amFilm OneTouch Tempered Glass Screen Protector for Pixel 9 worked way better for me personally.

In my experience, it really comes down to the adhesive layer. I tried a cheap brand first and it was a total fail—the sensor literally couldn't read through it. I ended up switching to the ZAGG InvisibleShield Glass Elite for Pixel 9 and the response time felt almost native. It’s slightly pricier, but the ion-exchange tech they use makes it super thin without losing the drop protection. Honestly, once you re-register your prints after the install and toggle that 'Screen Protector Mode' in settings, it’s pretty much instant. I'm gonna stick with thinner tempered glass this time too cuz those bulky ones just mess with the haptics imo. good luck with the new phone tho!!

yo, i feel u on the sensor struggle... had issues with my old phone and it was basically unusable. honestly, i think you should check out the amFilm 3 Pack OneTouch Tempered Glass for Google Pixel 9 cuz its usually way cheaper than those premium brands, like under $15 sometimes.

Check out these resources for better deals:
* Google's official list of "Made for Google" certified partners (it's the safest bet for ultrasonic compatibility)
* The r/GooglePixel subreddit—there's usually a megathread for accessories right after launch

pro tip: if it feels laggy, definitely toggle on the "Screen protector mode" in settings and re-register your prints *after* the glass is on. gl!
