Hey everyone, I just picked up the new Pixel 8a and I'm really enjoying the device so far, but I’m a bit nervous about the screen. I've heard that the in-display optical fingerprint sensors on Pixel phones can be hit or miss once you slap a protector on. I really want to stick with tempered glass for the superior drop protection, but I definitely don't want to deal with failed scans or laggy unlocking every time I check my notifications.

I’ve already looked into the 'Screen Protector Mode' in the display settings, but I haven't pulled the trigger on a purchase yet because the reviews on Amazon are all over the place. Some people swear by the cheap multi-packs, while others say you absolutely have to go with the 'Made for Google' certified brands like Zagg or Spigen to keep the sensor snappy. I’m also curious if anyone has tried the TPU film style instead, or if that’s just asking for scratches. For those of you already rocking an 8a, which brands have you had the most success with? Did you have to re-register your fingerprints after the install to get it to work right? I’m looking for a reliable tempered glass option that won't break the bank—what’s your top recommendation for a seamless biometric experience?

In my experience, the fingerprint sensor on the Pixel 8a is definitely a bit sensitive when it comes to glass, but it's totally manageable if you get the right kit. I went through this exact same headache last month... honestly, I bought a random cheap pack first and it was a total disaster. Failed scans every single time, it was so annoying lol. I ended up switching to the Spigen Glass.tR EZ Fit Tempered Glass for Pixel 8a and it’s been a total game changer. It comes with this plastic alignment tray that makes it impossible to mess up the install. But here is the real secret: you HAVE to re-register your fingerprints after the glass is on. I actually registered my main thumb twice—once while pressing normally and once with a slightly different angle—and now it's basically instant. If you want the absolute best and dont mind spending a bit more, the Zagg InvisibleShield Glass Elite for Pixel 8a is officially 'Made for Google' and it works perfectly, but it's kinda pricey tbh. For a more budget-friendly pick that actually works, I’ve heard good things about the amFilm OneTouch Tempered Glass Screen Protector for Google Pixel 8a 3-Pack too. Just make sure you toggle on that Screen Protector Mode in the settings and youll be golden. TPU film is okay for scratches but i mean... if you drop it, you're toast. Stick with the Spigen glass, it's the best balance of price and performance imo. Good luck!

> I really want to stick with tempered glass for the superior drop protection Seconding the recommendation above! Optical sensors hate light refraction, so thinner is better. Option A: Whitestone Dome Glass EA (Pro: thin/clear, Con: pricey) vs Option B: amFilm Elastic Skin TPU (Pro: super fast, Con: soft). Best choice is Whitestone for that glass feel; just re-register your fingerprints twice after the install and you're golden! Cheers.

^ This. Also, unfortunately I’ve had issues with even the recommended brands not being as good as expected when my hands are dry... the sensor just gives up sometimes. I was honestly pretty bummed with the first few sets I bought. If you are doing the install yourself, I actually found the IMBZBK 4-Pack Tempered Glass Screen Protector for Google Pixel 8a to be the most reliable for the price, though it still isnt perfect compared to a bare screen. Quick tip for the DIY crowd: do the install in a steamy bathroom after a shower. It keeps the dust away which is huge for sensor accuracy. Also, definitely register your main thumb twice in the settings. It basically forces the phone to be less picky about the angle. Its annoying we have to jump through these hoops but it works way better that way.

Seconding what was said earlier! Honestly, I've tried so many over the years and a high price doesn't always mean better scans. I just grabbed the LK 3-Pack Tempered Glass Screen Protector for Google Pixel 8a for like $10 and it's SO much better. In my experience, thinner glass is the secret... basically it helps with light refraction. Just re-scan ur thumb after installing and it works great!

This is exactly what I needed to hear. Youre a lifesaver honestly.

@Reply #6 - good point! Dry skin is a massive factor with optical sensors because the ridge detail isnt as clear for the camera to pick up through the extra glass layer. Looking at the discussion so far, we have a great mix of high-end liquid adhesive kits and budget-friendly multi-packs that prioritize thinness for better light refraction. Ive been testing glass for years and the technical specifications on light transmission are really what matter here. If you want something that lasts and maintains that snappy biometric feel, these are fantastic alternatives:
