I recently picked up the OnePlus Open and I am absolutely loving the hardware so far, but I’m terrified of dropping it! Since it's such a premium foldable with that massive camera bump and the unique hinge mechanism, I really want to find a case that offers solid protection without making this sleek device feel like a brick in my pocket.
I’ve been looking at a few options online, but I'm torn between getting something rugged like the Poetic Spartan or sticking with a thinner Aramid fiber case. My main concern is the hinge protection—some cases seem to leave it completely exposed, while others have those bulky hinge covers that don't let the phone lay flat when unfolded. I also want to make sure the front screen frame stays securely in place without needing a ton of messy adhesive strips.
For those of you who have been rocking the Open for a while, which case has actually held up for you? Are there any specific brands that nail the balance between drop protection and maintaining the folding ergonomics? I’d love to hear your personal experiences before I pull the trigger on one!
Curious about one thing: what's your budget? Ngl, cheap cases *literally* scratch the frame. Try the OnePlus+Open&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Spigen Tough Armor Pro P for OnePlus Open—it’s amazing protection for the price!
Oh man, I totally feel u on this. Picking a case for the Open is seriously stressful cuz of that hinge! I've tried a few things, but honestly, I'm super happy with the OnePlus+Open&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Nillkin Frosted Shield Prop Case for OnePlus Open.
It basically nails the balance I was looking for. Here's why I like it:
- The camera cover actually doubles as a kickstand, which is lowkey genius.
- It has hinge protection that doesn't feel like a massive brick in ur pocket.
- The front frame actually stays put!
I also messed around with the OPPO+Find+N3+Protective+Set&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">OPPO Find N3 Protective Set (since it's the same phone hardware), and that one is great if u want something thinner, but it offers way less drop protection imo. If you're really worried about drops, maybe stay away from the super thin aramid fiber stuff... they look cool but wont do much if it hits concrete. Good luck with the new phone, its sooo good!! 👍
> I really want to find a case that offers solid protection without making this sleek device feel like a brick in my pocket. ^ This. Also, its honestly been such a disappointment trying to find something that actually works. Most of these expensive cases just dont stay on properly, and I had issues with the front frame snapping after only a few weeks. If you are trying to be budget-conscious, dont waste 80 bucks on a name brand that might fail anyway. I ended up going a different route. I bought a cheap OnePlus+Open&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Eastcoo Slim Fit Case for OnePlus Open and fixed the fit myself. Basically, the adhesive that comes on these is useless... youre much better off getting a roll of 3M 300LSE Double Sided Tape and applying it to the thin edges of the front cover. It makes it feel ten times more solid. Definitely check out some of the teardown videos on YouTube or threads on XDA before you buy. It really helps to see how the hinge mechanism actually clears the case so you dont end up with a protective case that actually traps grit and scratches your spine.
Basically, foldables are a technical headache cuz of the hinge clearance. I originally tried a rugged one but it *totally* ruined the ergonomics. Now, my current setup is just a super slim shell. Honestly, the secret is using high-quality double-sided tape for the front frame so it doesnt wiggle. It keeps it sleek and way more affordable.
TL;DR: Go thin and DIY the adhesive for the best balance.
Ive been through a fair share of foldables over the years and comparing the OnePlus protection options to what we get for Samsung or Google is always interesting. Before you settle on something tho, are you looking for full 360 coverage including the hinge spine, or do you mostly care about corner drop protection? Also, does the extra bulk from a rugged brand bother you or are you okay with it feeling like a tank? It actually reminds me of my old obsession with custom leather skins for laptops... i spent way too much time and money matching my gear back then. I even had a phase where I was restoring old fountain pens because I loved the tactile feel of the materials so much. Total rabbit hole that was. Anyway, let me know about the hinge priority.
Noted!
Omg i have this exact same issue!! Been rocking my Open since day one and I am still totally stuck on what to get. It is so frustrating because I feel like I am risking a thousand dollar brick every time I leave the house without a real solution... been dealing with this case anxiety for months now and literally nothing feels right. Honestly it kind of reminds me of when I was trying to find the perfect waterproof boots for a hiking trip last summer. I must have ordered and returned like five different pairs because none of them fit quite right or they were way too heavy, and I ended up just wearing my old sneakers and hoping for the best lol. My closet is still full of random outdoor gear I never use because I am so picky. But yeah, still searching for that perfect case too!
Saving this whole thread. So much good info here you guys are awesome.
