I just dropped my old phone and the screen shattered so I'm super paranoid now that my S25 Ultra is arriving Friday. Spent way too much on this thing and I'm stressed looking at cases because some are bulky bricks but the slim ones feel useless. I'm stuck between the OtterBox Defender which is pricey and the Spigen Tough Armor which is way cheaper but maybe less protective? I have about 60 bucks to spend and need it before I head out for a hiking trip next weekend. Does the Spigen actually hold up or should I just shell out for the OtterBox?

^ This. Also, just catching up and had to jump in because I love hiking too! I dropped my last phone on a trail and learned the hard way. Check these out:

I've used both brands for years and the Spigen Tough Armor Black S25 Ultra is actually pretty solid because of that yellow impact foam inside. It doesnt feel like a literal brick in your pocket which is nice for everyday use. Its totally fine for standard drops on pavement in my experience. But since you're heading out hiking... the OtterBox Defender Series Black S25 Ultra is basically the gold standard. It has a multi-layer design that absorbs impact way better than a single-shell case. If you just dropped a ton of cash on the S25 Ultra, spending the extra bit for the Defender is basically cheap insurance. Tbh the bulk is annoying but cracking a screen on a trail is way worse. If you want a middle ground, maybe look at the UAG Monarch Pro Kevlar S25 Ultra too, its light but super rugged.

If youre worried about that hiking trip next weekend, you really need to be careful with the Spigen. It’s a decent daily driver, but for rocky trails, I’d suggest something with more structural integrity. Tbh, paying sixty bucks for an OtterBox is sometimes just paying for the name brand. You can get way more protection for like half that if you look at specialized rugged brands. Here are a few things I would suggest looking into for your S25 Ultra:

  • SUPCASE Unicorn Beetle Pro Series Galaxy S25 Ultra Black is basically a tank. It’s usually under $30 on Amazon and it includes a built-in kickstand which is nice. Just be careful with the built-in screen protector tho; sometimes they mess with the fingerprint sensor, so make sure to check if you prefer using your own tempered glass.
  • i-Blason Armorbox Series for Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra is another solid choice. It has those extra-thick corners that really help if it lands face-down on a rock. Plus, it comes with a belt clip which might actually be useful for hiking so it's not just bouncing in your pocket.
  • Make sure to look for a case with a sliding camera cover if possible. The lenses on the S25 Ultra are huge and prone to scratches if you set it down on a dirty surface or drop it in the dirt.
  • Check the port covers. Dust and grit from trails can get into the charging port and really mess things up over time, so I always look for a case that seals those up... its a lifesaver for longevity. Saving thirty bucks on the case means you can actually afford a decent screen protector too. Dont skimp on that part because the case alone wont save you from a direct hit on a sharp rock.
