so I finally bit the bullet and got the new galaxy z fold 7 because my old phone was basically held together by tape and hope but man i am so confused about the charging situation. it didnt come with the actual wall plug thing which i guess is normal now? but looking online is making my head spin. there are all these numbers like 25w and 45w and then i see some that say 100w and im just sitting here like... will the 100w one explode my phone? i really dont want to break this thing on day one since it cost me a fortune lol.

my logic was just to buy the biggest number because bigger is better right? but then i read a comment on a reddit thread saying you need something called PPS or maybe it was PD? i dont even know what those stand for. i just want the fastest charge possible without ruining the battery health. im going on a trip to chicago next tuesday so i really need to order something by tomorrow so it gets here in time. I usually just use whatever cable is lying around the house but I feel like for a phone this fancy I should probably be more careful.

i checked the samsung site but their chargers are kinda pricey and i saw some third party ones like anker or ugreen that look way cooler and have more ports but i dont know if they are safe for the fold 7. my budget is maybe 40 or 50 bucks tops for the whole setup. also does the cable matter? i have a bunch of old cables in a drawer but maybe i need a special one for the fast charging to actually work?

sorry if this is a really basic thing to ask but i honestly have no idea where to start with all this tech stuff. every time i think i found a good one i read a review saying it gets super hot or it doesnt actually fast charge the samsung specifically. what are you guys actually using for yours to get that super fast charging message to pop up on the screen...

Jumping in here because I love these technical details! To achieve Super Fast Charging 2.0, your charger must support the PPS protocol. Dont worry, a 100W charger is perfectly safe as the Fold only pulls what it requires.

I spent hours with a USB-C power meter testing my setup because im a total nerd for this stuff. ^ This. Also, seeing the debate about PPS vs PD, it really just comes down to the communication between the brick and the Fold. My old laptop brick would only give me 15W because it didnt have the right PPS profile, which was annoying as hell during a layover once. Basically, if the charger cant talk to the phone in tiny voltage steps, it defaults to a slow safe speed. Safety wise, these GaN (Gallium Nitride) chargers stay much cooler than the old silicon ones. So to summarize what everyone said, you need PPS and a 5A cable for the 45W speeds. Since you mentioned the Chicago trip and needing to stay under 50 bucks, here is what i usually suggest:

  • Spigen ArcStation Pro 45W Wall Charger - very small and never gets hot even during fast cycles.
  • Baseus 65W GaN5 Pro USB C Charger - this one is great for travel because you can charge your phone and your earbuds at once.
  • Anker 543 USB-C to USB-C Cable 140W - you need this because a standard old cable will cap you at 25W. Just make sure the cable has an e-marker chip. Without it, the charger wont push more than 3 amps for safety reasons. If you see the blue charging ring instead of the green one when you plug in, you know youve hit that Super Fast 2.0 speed... have a good trip!

To add to the point above: I totally agree about the communication between the brick and the phone. I learned that the hard way with a generic multi-port charger I grabbed at the airport once. It claimed to be high wattage but it got so hot I was genuinely worried it would melt the charging port. Even worse, every time I plugged in a second device, the Fold would stop fast charging and just trickle charge instead. It kept cycling on and off which is apparently really bad for the battery long term. Now im super cautious about heat management. Just because a brick has a big number on the side doesnt mean it handles the power safely. Honestly, if the charger feels like a toaster after ten minutes, I just wont use it. Reliability is way more important to me than saving twenty minutes, especially with how much these folding screens cost to repair. Just be careful with those super cheap off-brand blocks that dont have proper thermal protection...

Honestly its pretty disappointing that Samsung still makes us hunt for these. I had issues with some older bricks barely charging the Fold at all. Quick question tho, are you just charging the phone or do you need to juice up a laptop too while in Chicago? Heres what Id grab to stay under 50 bucks:
