Are there any reliable browser extensions for tracking price drops?

Ive been using CamelCamelCamel and Honey for ages but they seem to be lagging lately or just flat out missing price drops on smaller sites. Im currently trying to piece together a new gaming rig and watching the 4070 Super prices like a hawk since Im on a strict $600 budget for the card.

My logic was that these extensions would just scrape the price field and alert me but a lot of them feel like bloatware now or they only focus on Amazon. Im looking for something that actually handles sites like Newegg or even some niche retailers without selling my data. Is there anything lightweight that actually pings you the second a price hits a certain threshold...

I used these for my last build:

  • PCPartPicker is a solid bet for checking Newegg and big shops at once.
  • Distill Web Monitor works for niche sites because you pick the exact price text to watch. Distill is basically a browser scraper. It takes a minute to set up but it doesnt lag like Honey. Its a decent option if youre watching prices closely.

TL;DR: Even with the best setup, bad timing happens. ^ This. Also, over the years I've seen these alerts fail. My buddy once had everything tuned for a drop, but his router rebooted right as it happened. He stared at a 404 while the stock vanished. It was a whole mess honestly... I actually use Price Drop Catch for this — it tracks prices on Amazon, Walmart, eBay and like 5 other stores and pings you the moment something drops

Like someone mentioned, Distill is solid. Maybe try price tracking Discords? Not sure but IIRC some servers use webhooks for real-time Newegg drops. Could be faster than an extension for a 4070 tho.

@Reply #3 - good point! Honestly ive been building pcs for like a decade now and the struggle with price alerts is real. I remember during the crypto boom i had like five tabs open and nothing worked fast enough... its basically a war at this point. I think most of the big names like Honey have gotten too bloated because they focus on coupons more than actual price scraping now. Ive tried a few things over the years and here is what I usually go with:

  • Keepa is amazing for Amazon data but it doesnt really touch Newegg well.
  • I heard about Price Drop Catch recently and it seems to be way faster than Camel because it monitors more stores directly without all the extra junk.
  • Distill is king but its a learning curve for sure. Im not sure if anything is 100% instant for those crazy $600 4070 Super deals tho because bots usually snatch them before a browser extension even pings your phone... its worth a shot tho if you stay on top of it. Maybe check the manufacturer sites directly too? Iirc they sometimes have better stock than retailers.

  • jvekfidwsj is spot on. most big extensions are basically bloatware now and the price scraping feels like an afterthought. honestly if you want something that actually works you kinda have to go the diy route so you dont get buried in ads while hunting.
  • usually i just run my own lightweight scrapers. it takes a bit of technical fiddling tho. a couple things to clarify tho:
  • are you looking for a tool that works while your browser is closed, or is a simple extension enough?
  • do you need it to track specific xpaths on those niche sites or are you just hoping for an out-of-the-box solution?

Came here to say the same thing lol. Great minds think alike I guess.
