Hey everyone! I finally picked up the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and I’m absolutely blown away by the quality of the new Log recording features. However, as many of you probably already know, shooting in 4K 60fps ProRes Log eats through internal storage like crazy—we’re talking gigabytes per minute! I’m looking to start recording directly to an external SSD via the USB-C port to save my internal space and make transferring files to my Mac a bit faster.
I’ve done a bit of research, but I’m feeling a little overwhelmed by the options. Since Apple requires a drive that can sustain at least 220MB/s for 4K60 ProRes, I want to make sure I buy something that won't drop frames or overheat during a long shoot. I’m currently looking at the Samsung T7 Shield and the SanDisk Extreme, but I’ve read some conflicting reviews about thermal throttling. I’m also curious about how you guys are physically attaching them—are you using a specific MagSafe mount or just a small rig cage?
I’m looking for a 1TB or 2TB drive that is compact enough to not feel like a brick hanging off my phone. Does anyone have a specific recommendation for a drive that has been rock-solid for you in the field?
1. Used to drop frames until I got the Samsung T7 Shield 2TB Portable SSD.
2. It handles sustained 220MB/s write speeds perfectly.
Actually, it’s way better at thermal management than the SanDisk. Cheers!
So basically the consensus is the T7 or Crucial are the safest bets. Ngl, i’ve had issues with overheating drives before and losing footage is literally the worst. If you want something rock-solid, check out the SanDisk Professional G-DRIVE SSD 2TB. It's built like a tank and handles thermals way better than the standard Extreme. Just make sure ur cable is high-speed too... gl!
For your situation, compare the Crucial X9 Pro 2TB Portable SSD vs the Kingston XS2000 2TB Pocket-Sized Portable SSD. The Crucial is tiny with amazing thermal stability, while the Kingston is basically faster but maybe gets warmer. IMO, the Crucial is probably the best choice for 4K60 rigs! Ngl, I use a SmallRig MagSafe SSD Holder to keep it secure. It's FANTASTIC and wont drop frames!! gl!
Adding my two cents... seconding the recommendation above! My tip is to check your mount first. But real quick... what's ur budget?? And r u looking for a MagSafe mount or a full cage?? Ngl, knowing the attachment style helps a ton because some drives are just way too bulky for MagSafe and cost definately varies depending on the rig!!
