Just picked up the Pixel 8 Pro and want to try some serious emulation and Cloud Gaming. Iām looking for a USB-C controller that fits its large frame comfortably, preferably one that works with a thin case. Should I go with a Backbone or the Gamesir G8? What are you guys using for a solid, lag-free experience?
Late to the party but honestly, I have been reading up on this a ton because I just got into mobile gaming myself and it is sooo exciting!! Before you drop big money, its probably worth knowing why everyone is obsessed with USB-C vs Bluetooth. Basically, for Cloud Gaming, you want a direct connection to minimize polling rate lag. If there is even a tiny delay, you're gonna feel it in your inputs, which is literally the worst when you're trying to play something fast-paced!
TL;DR from this thread:
* The Backbone One might be too small and picky with cases.
* The GameSir G8 Galileo seems like the winner for comfort on a big phone like the Pixel 8 Pro.
* Case compatibility is the biggest headache for everyone.
Since I'm kinda a beginner and really budget-conscious, I was super worried about spending $100+ on a dedicated controller. I actually tried a different route! I think I heard someone say you can just use a regular Xbox or DualSense controller with a $10 phone clip from Amazon? IIRC, that's what a lot of people do to save money. I tried it and it was fantastic, though honestly, it feels a bit top-heavy and I'm always scared the clip might scratch the frame of my phone... so definitely be cautious there!!
Not sure if that fits ur vibe, but if you want a solid, lag-free experience without breaking the bank, a clip and a controller you already own is a great starting point. But yeah, the consensus here seems to be that if you want the "Switch" feel, go for the bigger GameSir model. Hope that helps!! 👍
Ok so, for your Pixel 8 Pro, I gotta say I was honestly super disappointed with the Backbone One USB-C (2nd Gen). It feels way too small for such a massive phone and fitting a case in there is a nightmare.
I would suggest the GameSir G8 Galileo instead. It actually has the space for your thin case and the hall effect sticks are sooo much better for cloud gaming. Plus, the ergonomics are way more solid for long sessions. gl!

Curious about one thing: what kinda case are you rockin' on your phone? Honestly, Iāve had some close calls with my current setup where the connector barely reached because of the port cutout size.
1. I actually started with a different brand cuz I wanted something super portable.
2. But then, I basically almost snapped the USB-C plug because the fit was so tight with my shell on!!
3. It works now after I did some DIY trimming, but it was lowkey stressful.
Anyway, if ur case is even slightly bulky, it changes everything for these controllers. Let me know the brand/thickness so I can actually give decent advice??

@Reply #7 - good point! Tbh just saw this thread and it really hits home for me. Everyone here is basically saying the GameSir G8 Galileo or maybe the Razer Kishi V2 are the move for the Google Pixel 8 Pro because of that massive screen. It makes sense since some of those other options are basically toothpicks lol. I had a pretty bad experience with the one I got last month tho. I was so hyped for some lag-free sessions but it was honestly such a letdown for a few reasons:
Seconding the recommendation above regarding the Gamesir! Honestly, I totally agree with the first reply because the Backbone is seriously too small for the Pixel 8 Pro. I've had issues with the Backbone's bridge feeling like it's about to snap when stretched over such a huge phone, and safety-wise, putting that much tension on your USB-C port is just asking for a broken connection eventually.
Since you're looking for alternatives that weren't mentioned, I've been using the Razer Kishi V2 for Android lately. It's actually great because it has these removable rubber inserts, so it basically fits almost any thin case without you having to struggle. If you want something even more premium and ergonomic for those long emulation sessions, you should definitely check out the Turtle Beach Atom Mobile Game Controller. Itās a two-piece design that clamps on separately, so it doesn't matter how big the phone is! Plus, it feels way safer since it doesn't put constant pressure on the phone's frame like the bridge-style ones do. Just my two cents, gl! 👍
I've been using the GameSir X2 Pro-Xbox Mobile Controller for a few months now and I'm super happy with it. The USB-C connector on it actually tilts, which is great because you dont feel like youre gonna break the port when putting the phone in. It fits my Pixel 8 Pro with a slim case no problem. Quick tip: if the fit is still tight, you can just peel off those little rubber liners on the sides of the controller. Doing that made mine fit perfectly. No complaints on the lag either, it's basically instant since it's a direct connection.
@Reply #8 - good point! Unfortunately, I have been kinda disappointed with how many controllers claim universal fit but fail to account for the Pixels camera visor. I had serious issues with the Nacon MG-X Pro for Android because it simply wouldnt sit flat, which put too much torque on the USB-C port during longer sessions. Its frustrating when premium gear ignores device-specific dimensions like that. If you want something that actually fits the larger frame without constant stress on the hardware, consider these:
