Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger and upgraded to the Google Pixel 8 Pro during the recent sales. I’m absolutely loving the camera and that super smooth display, but I ran into a bit of a snag that I didn't fully prep for. Like most flagships these days, it didn't come with a charging brick in the box—just the USB-C cable. I tried using an old brick I had lying around from my previous phone, and it feels like it’s taking an eternity to get from 20% to full.
I’ve been doing some digging, and I know the Pixel 8 Pro is rated for up to 30W wired charging, but apparently, it’s not as simple as just grabbing any 30W plug. I keep seeing mentions of "PPS" (Programmable Power Supply) and "USB-PD 3.0," and honestly, it’s getting a little overwhelming. I want to make sure I’m actually hitting those top speeds and not just trickle-charging or, worse, buying something that isn't fully compatible with Google’s charging standards.
My main priority is battery health. I usually keep my phones for 3 or 4 years, so I’m looking for a charger that is efficient and doesn't generate excessive heat. I’ve looked at the official Google 30W USB-C charger, but I’ve also seen some really compact GaN chargers from brands like Anker and Ugreen that look tempting, especially since some have extra ports for my Pixel Buds. My budget is around $30-$50, but I'm willing to spend a bit more if it means better long-term reliability for the phone.
For those of you who have been using the Pixel 8 Pro for a while now, which fast charger have you found to be the most reliable and consistent? Is it worth sticking with the official Google one for peace of mind, or is there a specific third-party PPS charger that you’d swear by?
> For those of you who have been using the Pixel 8 Pro for a while now, which fast charger have you found to be the most reliable and consistent? Respectfully, I'd consider another option besides just grabbing the basic Google brick. So i actually went through three different chargers before I realized that "30W" is kinda a lie if the PPS protocol isnt perfectly matched. I mean, I used an old Macbook charger at first and my phone was getting crazy hot... like, uncomfortable to touch hot. The reason PPS is so important for ur battery health is because it lets the charger talk to the phone to adjust voltage in tiny increments. Without it, your Pixel 8 Pro has to convert that power internally, which creates MASSIVE heat. Honestly, I'd skip the official one and grab the Anker 711 Charger (Nano II 30W). Its super tiny and the GaN II tech is way more efficient than Google's standard tech. If you really want those extra ports, the Ugreen Nexode 45W GaN Dual USB-C Charger is a beast and handles the PPS handshake perfectly for both the phone and buds. Lesson learned: Heat is the enemy, so make sure that PPS spec is listed explicitly or you're just wasting money!! peace
yo, honestly you dont need to spend a ton for that 30W sweet spot. i've been using the Anker 313 Charger (Ace, 45W) and it's basically perfect cuz it supports PPS but is way cheaper than the official brick. another solid budget pick is the Spigen ArcStation Pro GaN 45W Wall Charger. both stay super cool and definitely wont break the bank, you know? gl!
In my experience, that PPS requirement is actually pretty huge for keeping the heat down while charging. It basically lets the phone tell the charger to tweak the voltage in real-time, which is why your old brick feels so slow and probably gets hotter than it should. Since your looking to save some cash but still want that safety-first approach, I would suggest the Belkin BoostCharge 30W USB-C Wall Charger with PPS. It's usually around $22 and they're super reliable with power delivery standards. Another solid budget move is the Samsung 25W USB-C Wall Charger (EP-TA800). I know it's only 25W, but honestly, the charging curve on Pixels drops off so fast anyway that you barely notice the difference compared to 30W. You can usually find these for like $15. If you really want GaN tech for the efficiency and size, look at the Baseus GaN5 Fast Charger 30W. It's tiny, stays cool, and costs about $16-18. Just make sure the cable you use is rated for PD too! gl with the 8 Pro, it's a beast lol.
