I just picked up the new Google Pixel 8a and I'm really impressed with the device so far, but I hit a bit of a snag regarding the battery. Like most phones nowadays, it didn't come with a charging brick in the box. I've been trying to use some of my older USB-A to USB-C chargers from a few years ago, but the charging speed is painfully slow. It often takes well over two hours to get a full charge, which just isn't practical for my daily routine.
I've been doing some research and I'm seeing a lot of talk about USB-PD and PPS (Programmable Power Supply) standards. I'm a bit confused if I need a specific wattage to hit the 8a's maximum charging speed effectively. I know Google sells their official 30W charger, but I'm wondering if there are better third-party alternatives from brands like Anker or Ugreen that might be more compact or offer better value. I am also a little worried about long-term battery health and heat issues if I use a charger that isn't perfectly compatible.
I'm looking for something reliable that supports the fast charging protocol correctly so I can actually see that "charging rapidly" message on my lock screen. Does anyone have a specific model they recommend that balances price and performance for the 8a, and do I need to buy a special cable to go with it?
Just catching up on this thread... Respectfully, I'd consider another option because you realy dont need to spend Anker prices to get top-tier safety. I once used a cheap gas-station brick that literally smelled like burning plastic!! Scared the life out of me, right? After that, i got realy careful about heat management and compatibility. While the previous suggestion is solid, I think your paying a premium for the name. These offer better value and safety:
ok so, for your situation, i suggest sticking to brands like Anker to avoid heat issues. I'm really satisfied with the Anker 511 Charger Nano 3 30W since it supports PPS—exactly what the 8a needs for safe charging. it's super compact and i havent had any complaints. Just use the cable from the box to see that charging rapidly message... it works well and tbh keeps the battery healthy imo!
Gonna try this over the weekend. Will report back if it works!
