I just upgraded to the OnePlus Open, but I’m struggling to find a car mount that handles its weight, especially when unfolded for navigation. Most standard holders seem too flimsy for this beast! Does anyone have recommendations for a sturdy mount that supports the open screen and won't block the vents?
sooo, i feel u on this. i’ve been rocking foldables since the early days and the weight is definitely a beast to deal with. i remember my first one just flopped over whenever i hit a bump... so annoying!! basically you want something that sticks to the dash if you wanna keep your vents clear because those clips just cant handle the leverage. here is what i recommend based on my experience: * APPS2Car Dashboard Suction Cup Tablet Mount - Pros: seriously sturdy and holds the Open perfectly when it's fully unfolded. - Cons: it takes up a bit of dash space.
* LISEN Magnetic Tablet Mount for Car - Pros: way cleaner look and lowkey very strong magnets. - Cons: you gotta stick a metal plate on your case which might block wireless charging i guess. i eventually settled on the suction one and im reallyyy happy with it. it just works well and doesnt move an inch. lesson learned: dont trust vent clips with a phone this big lol. gl! 👍
Story time: I went through this last year and it was SO stressful lol. I was lowkey broke after buying the phone, so I tried the Loncaster Silicone Car Phone Holder for like $13. It just sits on ur dash! It actually handled the weight surprisingly well unfolded... i think? It was way cheaper than those $50 ones. Its seriously fantastic for a budget option!! Hope that helps!!
I totally agree that the heavy-duty route is the only way to go with something as heavy as the Open. If you're okay with a little DIY honestly the best thing is to skip the pre-packaged kits and just build your own setup. I ended up getting a Arkon Heavy Duty 4-Hole AMPS Wall Mount and just used some super strong 3M VHB tape to stick it to a flat spot on my dash instead of drilling. It basically gives you a permanent rock-solid base that wont budge even with the phone unfolded. Then you just grab a generic tablet spring-loaded cradle to pop on the end. Tbh it’s way cheaper than those pro-grade systems and you can customize the height so it doesnt block your vents at all (which was my biggest pet peeve). Just make sure you tighten the swivel bolts really well once you find your angle and you’re golden!
For ur situation, the unfolded phone creates a huge fulcrum that snaps standard clips. I suggest the iOttie Easy One Touch 5 CD Slot Mount as a budget-friendly solution that uses the dash's structural integrity instead of flimsy vents. It's been pretty rock-solid for the price and handles the weight perfectly... seriously works well!
Story time: I was terrified of my screen cracking. Honestly, heavy-duty brands like RAM Mounts worked for me. Reliability is basically everything for safety when ur phone is heavy!
Wait really?? Thats actually super helpful. I always thought it was the other way around.
I am quite satisfied that we are finally discussing the physics of this because the OnePlus Open definitely pushes the limits of standard mounting brackets. GoddessStar is right that the AMPS pattern is a much more professional standard for this kind of weight. It reminds me of a project my buddy did with a heavy-duty navigation setup. He spent a month looking at the dampening coefficients of different rubber mounts. He was worried about the resonant frequency of the dash causing micro-stutters in the display. We even looked at the thermal expansion of the dash plastic to see if the mount would loosen at 100 degrees... he spent so much time on the data and technical drawings that he didnt actually install the thing. It was just a pile of parts on his workbench for a year. It was a total ordeal. TL;DR: The technical specs of mount stability are a deep rabbit hole, much like my friends over-engineered navigation project.
