I finally pulled the trigger on the OnePlus Open and man this thing is gorgeous but it also feels like I'm holding a piece of fragile jewelry. I am so paranoid about scratching either of the screens especially since I'm taking it on a hiking trip to Scotland next week and there is gonna be grit and wind everywhere. So I was thinking about getting a glass one for the front and maybe a film for the inside? My logic was that the factory one is okay but I keep seeing people say it peels after a month or two.

I did some digging and saw the dbrand ones are highly rated but they are super pricey and I read on a reddit thread that they might be too thick for some cases which is annoying. Then I saw the Ibywind ones on Amazon which are way cheaper but I'm worried the quality is gonna be trash and it wont stick right near the edges. I really dont want to ruin the oleophobic coating or anything. Has anyone found a brand that actually feels like the original screen?

  • dbrand (expensive/thick?)
  • Ibywind (cheap/durability?)

I have about 40 quid to spend and I need something that wont take three weeks to ship here to the UK. Are there any specific ones that play nice with the hinge or should I just leave the internal screen alone and only worry about the outside? I'm just really stuck on whether it is even safe to swap the inner one myself or if it messes up the warranty...

^ This. Also, seriously, dont even think about touching the inner screen protector. Its basically part of the display assembly on these foldables and peeling it yourself is a one-way ticket to voiding your warranty or worse, killing the pixels. If it peels later on, let OnePlus handle it via their official service. For the outer screen tho, I am super satisfied with these options:

Honestly, these arent trash at all. I have them on mine and the fit is perfect. It usually comes with a protector for the massive camera lens and a back skin too which helps with grip. Its thin enough that it doesnt interfere with most cases.

If you want that slicker feel, Spigen is always a safe bet. The oleophobic coating is definitely better than the generic brands and it feels just like the original glass. Both of these ship fast from Amazon UK so you'll have them way before your trip. Just make sure you clean the front screen like crazy before applying so no Scotland grit gets trapped under there... that would be a nightmare for the finish.

I've been messing with foldables since the very first ones came out, and honestly, the OnePlus Open is the first one where I finally felt like the hardware was solid enough to actually live with. I totally get the paranoia tho. When I first got mine, I was terrified of every speck of dust. I remember taking it out on a windy day near the beach and I was basically holding my breath every time I unfolded it because I just knew some grit was gonna find its way in there. About that inner screen... I'm fairly certain I heard somewhere that if you peel off the factory-installed protector yourself, it might void your warranty or at least make things a nightmare if you need a repair later. I think the general advice is to just leave it be until it naturally starts to lift. Someone told me the actual display underneath is super soft compared to normal phones, so I haven't dared touch mine. No complaints so far, it still looks brand new after months of use and feels fine under the thumb. For the cover screen, I definitely recommend going with a tempered glass option over a film. I've been really happy with the one I ended up with. It feels just like the original glass and hasn't messed with my case fit at all. IIRC, some of those really pricey brands can be a bit thick for certain tight-fitting cases, but the one I grabbed fits like a glove. Shipping to the UK didn't take long either, maybe a week? If you're heading to Scotland with all that grit and wind, you'll definitely want that extra layer of peace of mind on the front at least.

^ This. Also, I'm gonna disagree a bit on the inner screen being a total no-go. Some teardowns show the top layer is just a high-tension PET film. Not 100% sure but I've heard of people using generic hydrogel replacements once the factory one starts lifting at the crease. Swapping it is risky but definitely doable if you're patient and have a steady hand. If you're looking to save some cash, maybe stick to a basic TPU film for the front instead of tempered glass? Glass is usually around 0.3mm which can cause issues with the frame clearance on foldables, whereas TPU is half that and handles grit way better without chipping. IIRC the oleophobic coating on the cheaper generic films is actually decent these days. Just maybe don't mess with the inner one right before your trip... ngl, if you get a bubble or a dust speck in the middle of a hike, it'll drive you nuts.
