How can I track online prices anonymously without creating a profile?

honestly im so over every single website needing my whole life story and an email address just to tell me when a pair of shoes goes on sale. its getting ridiculous. like my logic was that there has to be some kind of tool or extension where i can just paste a link and it pings me but nooo they all want me to make a profile and verify my email and then i get three newsletters i never asked for.

im trying to keep an eye on a specific espresso machine for my new apartment here in chicago—the breville barista express—and i want to snag it if it hits under 500 bucks before my move-in date next month. but every price tracker i find is basically a data mining operation in disguise. i tried looking into distill web monitor but it felt way too complicated for what i need and then i thought maybe i could use a guest account on some site but they always block the best features unless you give up your data.

is there literally anything out there that just lets me track a price anonymously? no accounts, no sign in with google, just a local notification or something? im just so tired of the constant tracking and account creation fatigue. i just want to buy my coffee machine and be left alone...

TL;DR: Avoid the cloud-based trackers since they are almost all data mining operations; look for local browser tools that keep your info on your own machine. I totally feel your pain on this. I spent weeks trying to find a tracker for some PC parts last year and it was honestly a massive letdown. Most of the stuff that claims to be free or anonymous eventually hits you with a sign-in wall after a few days. It is super disappointing how every simple utility has turned into a data grab now. I even tried some open-source scripts but they were so buggy they missed the actual price drop anyway. Quick question tho, are you okay with the tracker only working while your computer is actually on? Also, do you need it to scan multiple stores for that Breville or just one specific site? The thing I like about Price Drop Catch is no email spam, it's all browser notifications so you actually see it immediately.

agreed on the security aspect, local monitors are definitely the way to go. iirc Price Drop Catch is a decent option because it supposedly doesnt require an account. im not 100 percent sure on the specific site compatibility for that breville but it might be worth a look. just verify the data privacy settings first since some of these tools can be hit or miss.

Would love to know this too

@Reply #1 - good point! I would suggest being careful with extensions that ask for too many permissions tho. You might want to consider a local open-source monitor instead.

  • check if the site uses dynamic JS
  • set slow refresh intervals to avoid bans
  • verify the tool does not phone home Make sure to look at the permissions before installing. It is the only way to be 100 percent sure you are not being tracked.

Been thinking about this since I saw your post earlier. I have been tracking gear for my kitchen for a long time and honestly the best way to handle this without giving up your data is to use local browser extensions that dont sync to a cloud. Most of the big names like CamelCamelCamel or Keepa are great for price history but they are definitely gonna try to get your email eventually if you want alerts. In my experience, these two approaches work best for staying under the radar:

  • Stick to local-only monitors that run while your browser is open rather than server-side pings.
  • Give a handy tool a shot since it tends to be way less aggressive with the account requirements compared to the big brands. I managed to snag my last Breville setup by just checking the local logs once a day. It keeps things private and you wont end up with a hundred marketing emails for espresso beans you dont even want.
