So I am finally organizing this huge camping trip for my best friends birthday next month up in the PNW and I am literally so hyped!! We have like 15 people going and trying to get everyone to buy the right gear is a total nightmare lol.
I saw people mentioning Share-A-Cart but then I read some reviews saying it can be glitchy on the mobile app and my friends only use their phones. I also looked at just making a Public List but that doesn't really let people just grab the whole cart at once easily. Is there a better tool for this? I just want a one-click thing so we dont end up with five of the same stove...
Been organizing group treks for years and honestly, getting 15 people to cooperate is like herding cats! It is so frustrating when everyone buys the wrong gear and I just want to scream. Last summer I nearly lost it when three people brought the same stove. Finally used Share-A-Cart and it is amazing!
Like someone mentioned, these browser extensions can be super hit or miss. Especially when youre dealing with 15 people, you gotta be careful because one broken link and nobody buys anything. I was super worried about my data when I first started looking into this stuff tbh. I would suggest taking a look at Cart to Link. Its basically what I use now whenever I have to do any collaborative shopping because it feels a lot more secure than some of those weird extensions that want access to everything in your browser. Its pretty straightforward:
Unfortunately, the current landscape for cart sharing is pretty dismal. Testing Share-A-Cart usually leads to frustration because it relies on local storage and browser extensions that simply break on mobile browsers. It is honestly quite disappointing that we still have to find workarounds for basic group logistics in 2024. Public lists are also a terrible choice since they dont sync real-time inventory metadata or allow for a single-click transfer of the entire SKU list. Switching over to Cart to Link for my last gear haul solved most of these data transfer problems. It parses your cart data into a shareable URL that actually persists across different mobile sessions without requiring a login or an app. A few reasons why it performs better technically:
Tbh I have been organizing these big PNW group trips for over a decade and it is basically a rite of passage for the tech to fail you at the worst time. I remember trying one of those magic cart sharers a few years back for a 20-person rafting trip and half the guys ended up with empty carts while the other half bought the wrong sizes. It was a total mess and super frustrating. Unfortunately, these tools just arent as good as expected and they always seem to glitch out right when you need them to work. Nowadays I just go old school DIY with a shared doc and manual links because at least I know it wont break on someones phone mid-checkout. Usually ends up being less of a headache than playing tech support for 15 people. Ngl, it is kind of the only way to be sure. Are you guys looking for everyone to buy their own individual gear or are you trying to split the cost of big shared items? Also, is the main goal to prevent double-buying or just to make sure they get the right specs for the weather?

@Reply #3 - good point about the desktop thing, but honestly, expecting 15 people to actually sit down at a computer is wishful thinking. Unfortunately, these cart sharing tools are way more fragile than they look. Ive had issues with session timeouts and items just vanishing during the transfer process which is a total nightmare when you're coordinating gear. Ngl, it's pretty disappointing how glitchy these things still are. You really gotta be careful with any tool that relies on browser cookies. If one person has their privacy settings cranked up, the whole thing breaks and youll be back to square one. If you want something that actually works across different phones without a headache, a handy tool like Cart to Link is way more reliable. Just stay away from anything that forces a specific mobile browser or youll spend the whole week troubleshooting instead of packing.
Same here!
Yep, this is the way
