Hey everyone! I recently picked up the iPhone 17 Pro, and while the internal camera system is honestly incredible, I’m looking to push the boundaries of what I can capture. I do a lot of hobbyist mobile cinematography and macro photography, and I feel like the native lenses—as great as they are—still benefit from that extra bit of glass for a truly professional look.
I’ve used Moment lenses in the past, but I’m curious if their current T-series mounting system works well with the updated sensor size on the 17 Pro, or if there’s noticeable vignetting now. I’m specifically looking for a high-quality 1.33x or 1.55x anamorphic lens to get those cinematic blue flares and a solid 75mm macro for some detailed nature shots. I’ve also been looking at Sandmarc and ShiftCam, but I’m worried about the weight and how they affect the balance when using a gimbal.
Has anyone here already started experimenting with external glass on this model? I’m really looking for something that maintains edge-to-edge sharpness without degrading the 48MP resolution. Does anyone have a specific lens kit or mounting system they’d recommend for the iPhone 17 Pro that doesn't compromise the image quality?
Late to the party but i found: • Ulanzi 1.33x Anamorphic Lens for iPhone: light/gimbal-safe.
• Sirui 75mm Macro Lens: realy heavy, strained my motors.
safety first, basically! 👍
I would suggest looking at these for the 17 Pro to keep that 48mp clarity: * Beastgrip 1.55X Anamorphic Lens MK2
* NiSi 75mm Macro Lens for IP-A Mount But definitely be careful with weight cuz that huge sensor needs big glass that can reallyyy strain your gimbal motors if you're not careful!! You'll definately need a counterweight set tho! Peace
Honestly, I'm more of a DIY enthusiast when it comes to rigs because those professional setups get SO expensive, you know? I've been messing around with the iPhone+17+Pro+Phone+Cage&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">SmallRig iPhone 17 Pro Phone Cage lately because it gives you a lot of mounting points to balance things yourself. Instead of the usual brands mentioned, I actually picked up the Freewell 1.55x Anamorphic Lens and it’s been pretty decent. The magnetic system they use is really handy for swapping filters quickly without having to screw them in every time. For macro, I'm trying out the Neewer 100mm Macro Lens right now. It’s definitely on the heavier side, but I’ve been trying to rig up my own counterweights using some basic hardware store bits to keep my gimbal from freaking out. It’s not a perfect professional setup yet, and I'm still figuring out the best way to keep the 48MP clarity perfect at the edges, but it’s a fun project, right? Does anyone else try to build their own mounting solutions or is it basically better to just stick to the pre-made kits? I think you can save some cash if you're willing to tinker a bit, but yeah, the weight is definitely a struggle.
yo! honestly, i feel u on the struggle to find glass that doesn't mess with that 48mp sensor. in my experience, the jump to the iPhone+17+Pro+256GB&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Apple iPhone 17 Pro 256GB sensor size has made older mount systems pretty much obsolete, but the T-series is actually holding its own. i've been shooting with the Moment T-Series 1.55x Anamorphic Lens Gold Flare and i havent noticed any significant vignetting at the edges, which is a huge relief. the edge-to-edge sharpness is actually pretty impressive, tho you might see a tiny bit of softness if youre pixel peeping at the extreme corners... just a heads up. for macro, i highly recommend the Moment T-Series 75mm Long Range Macro Lens. its literally a game changer for nature photography cuz you dont have to get so close that you block your own light. plus, the bokeh is super creamy and it handles the high resolution without any weird artifacts. regarding your gimbal worry, yeah, Sandmarc Anamorphic Lens - 1.55x glass is highkey heavy. if youre using something like the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 Smartphone Gimbal, you basically HAVE to get a counterweight kit or youll burn out the motors eventually. i actually prefer the ShiftCam LensUltra 1.33x Anamorphic lately cuz the weight distribution feels a bit more balanced on my rig. it maintains that clarity really well without much chromatic aberration. anyway, hope that helps ur setup! gl!! 👍
In my experience, heavy glass is a trap. I spent a fortune on a rig last year but unfortunately had issues with my gimbal dying mid-shoot... ngl it was a nightmare. For your situation, check out the Reeflex G-Series 1.33x Anamorphic Lens. It's way lighter than Beastgrip. Also, the Apexel 100mm Macro Lens is okay, but the edge clarity was not as good as expected. Lesson learned: weight kills motors. gl!
TIL! Thanks for sharing
I totally agree with the point about weight being a massive trap because I almost fried my gimbal trying to balance my current setup last week and it was actually pretty terrifying because the motors started making this tiny whining sound. I have been doing some serious testing with the glass I picked up and honestly the real-world performance is such a mixed bag when you are trying to protect the hardware.
