Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger and upgraded to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and I’m absolutely floored by the camera upgrades this year. The detail on the new 48MP sensors is incredible, but as someone who loves mobile photography and cinematic video, I feel like the stock hardware is just the starting point. I really want to push this device to its absolute limits, especially for an upcoming trip I have planned to the Swiss Alps.

I’ve been doing some research, but I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by the sheer volume of gear available now. Specifically, I’m looking for a high-quality ND filter system. With the improved aperture on the 17 Pro Max, I really want to be able to shoot at slower shutter speeds during the day to get that natural motion blur without blowing out the highlights. Does anyone have experience with the latest magnetic filter mounts? I’m worried about vignetting on the ultra-wide lens, which has been an issue for me on older models.

Also, I’m debating between getting a dedicated gimbal or just a high-end camera cage with some ergonomic grips. The built-in stabilization is great, but for long shooting days, my hands get tired and I lose that steady 'cinematic' flow. If you’re using a cage, which brands are currently fitting the 17 Pro Max dimensions perfectly without blocking the new buttons or the USB-C port? I'm also planning on shooting a lot of ProRes Log footage, so recommendations for a compact, fast external SSD that clips onto the back via MagSafe would be a lifesaver.

My budget is flexible—I’d rather buy one piece of high-quality gear than three cheap things that break in a month. I’m mostly focused on portability and ease of setup since I'll be hiking quite a bit.

What are the 'must-have' accessories you guys are using to turn your iPhone 17 Pro Max into a professional-grade rig? I’d love to hear your favorite setups for lenses, lighting, or even just a solid tripod recommendation!

For your situation, I'd actually focus on reliability and budget-friendly durability since the Alps can be rough. Honestly, a full gimbal is a safety hazard if you trip on a trail... totally not worth it lol. In my experience, the iPhone+17+Pro+Max&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Ulanzi Smartphone Video Rig for iPhone 17 Pro Max is a solid $40 pick. It's basically a protective shell that makes your grip way more secure so you dont drop your expensive phone down a cliffside. For filters, the K&F Concept Nano-X Series Magnetic ND Filter Kit is about $65 and the magnetic seal is strong enough that it wont pop off easily. To handle those ProRes files, I recommend the Crucial X9 Pro 2TB Portable SSD because it's rugged and fast. You can find it for around $150 lately. It’s small enough to Velcro to the back to save money on mounts. Safety first!! Hope that helps!!

Regarding what #3 said about "For your situation, I'd actually focus on reliability..." — man, I am right there with you. I'm no expert or anything, but I actually just went through the exact same research process last week for a trip I've got coming up and the decision paralysis is totally real. It’s like, you want the best footage possible because — well, it’s the Alps! — but at the same time, I’m terrified of bringing a bunch of expensive glass and magnets that are just going to pop off the second I hit a rough patch of trail. I've been agonizing over that exact same "professional" vs "portable" balance myself. Just to help me narrow down my own search too (since I'm basically copying your homework lol), I had a couple of questions: 1. Are you planning on doing most of your filming while you’re actually on the move — like hiking and talking — or is this more for static shots where you have time to actually rig things up?

  • How much does the "hand feel" matter to you once you've got the SSD and filters attached? I'm curious if you're okay with it being a bit of a bulky brick if it means the footage is rock solid. I'm still trying to figure out if the magnetic stuff is actually reliable enough for a serious hike or if it's just for city shooters — wait, no — I mean, I'm sure they're great, but the fear of losing a filter down a crevasse is a big concern for me!

Not to disagree, but I'd actually suggest a different approach for your trip. Honestly, if you're hiking the Swiss Alps, a full gimbal or a heavy metal cage is gonna feel like a brick after an hour. I tried that once and lowkey regretted it lol. It's basically a workout you didn't ask for. Instead of the super expensive rigs, here is what I use to keep it budget-friendly and light:
* SmallRig Universal Mobile Phone Cage CPU2391B — it's much cheaper than the high-end custom ones but still super solid for grips.
* For filters, I'd skip the pricey magnetic systems and get a Neewer 67mm Phone Lens Filter Kit with the threaded clip. It's way more secure for hiking.
* For ProRes, grab a Samsung T7 Shield 1TB Portable SSD and just velcro it to the back. It's fast enough for Log and way cheaper than MagSafe-specific ones. I mean, it might not look as "pro," but it saves you hundreds of bucks for the actual trip! gl!

ngl, the Swiss Alps are gonna be a workout, so you gotta keep it light!! i mean, high-end gear is cool but weight matters sooo much when youre hiking. 1. **Stabilization:** iPhone+17+Pro+Max&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">SmallRig Mobile Video Cage for iPhone 17 Pro Max vs a heavy gimbal. tbh, the cage is the better value choice. Gimbals are cool but they're bulky and the battery always dies at the worst time. A cage with the SmallRig Lightweight Side Handle gives you that 'cinematic' flow for way less money and weight. 2. **Optics:** For filters, check out the Freewell Sherpa Series True Color VND 1-5 Stop Filter. It uses a dedicated mount so it actually fixes that vignetting issue you had on the ultra-wide. Much better than the cheap clip-ons. 3. **Storage:** Since you're shooting ProRes, look at the Hagibis MagSafe SSD Enclosure for M.2 NVMe. You can put a Lexar NM790 2TB NVMe SSD inside. It snaps to the back so no dangling cables to get caught on your bag!! make sure to double check the cage fits the new buttons tho... but yeah, enjoy Switzerland! gl 👍
