What are the must-have protective cases for the new iPhone 17e?

Upgrading from an iPhone 13 mini because the battery is cooked and the screen feels way too cramped now. I'm hyped for the 17e, especially for the camera and that slim profile, but the new chassis dimensions are throwing me. I've used Spigen for years, but my logic is that this model needs something even thinner to keep the ergonomics right. I was thinking about aramid fiber, but I'm worried about that massive camera bump getting scratched. Is anyone seeing cases that actually balance the slim frame with decent drop protection? What are the must-have cases for the 17e so far?

I’ve been through three of these "thin" phone phases—back when the Air was a thing and even the earlier slim models—and honestly, everyone overthinks the aramid stuff. You get a Pitaka MagEZ Case 5 Aramid Fiber and yeah, it’s basically just a skin that costs fifty bucks, but the camera lip is always the weak point. I tried one of those ultra-thin Kevlar things years ago and it was garbage for anything other than scratches—actually, wait, no—it didn't even handle scratches on the frame well because the fit was too loose. If you’re worried about that 17e camera bump (which is huge, let’s be real), you really need to look at something like the Caudabe Sheath Minimalist Shockproof because it actually has some structure without making the phone feel like a tablet. My big tip, and I’ve learned this the hard way after cracking a lens on a "slim" case, is to check if the case has a dedicated raised ring—like a metal or hard plastic one—not just a molded TPU edge. The Spigen Liquid Air Matte Black is usually my go-to for a balance of "not feeling like a brick" and actually surviving a drop from a coffee table. Don't get sucked into the "zero bulk" marketing unless you plan on never setting your phone down on a rough surface, because that 17e chassis is going to show every little nick if the case doesn't wrap the edges properly.

I disagree that the Sheath is the best balance for the 17e. Its texture adds more perceived bulk than necessary. Aramid fiber often fails because the material is too rigid; it lacks the elastic deformation required to absorb kinetic energy, which then transfers directly to the glass. Prioritize these features:

  • A 1.5mm raised lip for the camera bump.
  • TPU edges for impact absorption.
  • Side thickness under 1.2mm. The Spigen Liquid Air iPhone 17e provides a 4-foot drop rating while staying thinner than the Sheath. The Torras Magnetic Guardian iPhone 17e also provides better shock-absorbing borders without the bulk.

> I was thinking about aramid fiber, but I'm worried about that massive camera bump getting scratched. tbh i am no expert but i literally just spent like three hours looking into this last week because i am in the same boat. ngl i think you are totally right to be worried about that bump... aramid fiber is cool for the vibes but those cases usually leave the lenses way too exposed. i found that even if a case has a lip, you gotta check if it has those tiny little "feet" on the back corners. if it doesnt have those, the phone is gonna WOBBLE like crazy every time you put it down on a table which drives me insane. its a small thing but definitely worth looking for if you wanna keep that camera glass safe and keep the phone stable.
