I’m finally upgrading from my old iPhone 11. It’s been five years and the phone is a wreck. The screen is cracked and the battery dies after two hours. I just bought the new iPhone 17 Pro and I’m terrified of breaking it. I have no idea where to start with cases. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I’m just confused by the options. I see terms like MagSafe and TPU and "military-grade" and I don't know what any of that means. Is MagSafe just for charging or does it help the case stay on?

I need to protect the camera most. The lenses look huge and I’m worried they will get scratched on a table. I also need something that isn't slippery. My old phone was always sliding out of my hands. My budget is flexible but I want something that actually works. Is a $60 case really better than a cheap $10 one? I’ve seen brands like Otterbox and Casetify but they look so different. I don't want the phone to be a giant brick in my pocket but it has to survive a drop on the sidewalk.

I'm also seeing stuff about clear cases turning yellow. Does that happen to all of them? I want to see the color of the phone but I don't want it to look gross in a month. And what about the screen? Do some cases come with a cover or do I buy that separate? I’m really out of the loop and don't want to waste money. What are the best protective cases for the new iPhone 17 Pro?

I was just reading through this and—honestly—you really can't be too careful with that new camera bump, I mean, it's like they're begging to be scratched. I'm the type who double-checks my case fit every morning, so I'd suggest looking at something a bit more robust if you're really worried about the sidewalk. If you want the absolute "tank" option, the OtterBox Defender Series for iPhone 17 Pro is what I usually go for, though—wait, actually, the XT version is a bit slimmer if you don't want a literal brick in your pocket. It has a port cover too, which is great for keeping lint out of the charging port—I've seen so many people ruin their phones just from pocket dust. On the other hand, if you want something that looks a bit more "normal" but still handles drops like a champ, I'd look at the Mous Limitless 5.0 for iPhone 17 Pro. They use this material called AiroShock—it’s basically like tiny air pockets—that absorbs the hit. I’d recommend checking out a YouTube channel called MobileReviewsEh; he does these really detailed "real world" tests that are much better than the marketing fluff. Just make sure you get a separate screen protector too—the cases rarely come with them anymore—and I'd recommend getting it professionally done at a shop if you're not sure about the alignment. Oh, and for the yellowing thing? Avoid the cheap clear ones. Even the "anti-yellowing" ones usually turn a bit tea-colored after six months. TL;DR: OtterBox Defender Series for iPhone 17 Pro for maximum safety and port protection, or Mous Limitless 5.0 for iPhone 17 Pro for high-end protection that isn't as bulky. Check YouTube drop tests for peace of mind!

@Reply #1 - good point! Tbh you dont need to drop $60 to protect that phone because MagSafe is just magnets for accessories and doesnt keep the case on, plus most clear cases yellow eventually so dont waste money there. If you want grip and camera protection without the "brick" feel then Spigen Liquid Air for iPhone 17 Pro or Ringke Onyx for iPhone 17 Pro are the best budget moves since they cost way less than big brands and have great textures. Lowkey just grab a Spigen Glas.tR EZ Fit screen protector kit for ten bucks and youll save a ton of money compared to what the Apple store charges for the same level of protection.

I agree about the protection — those lenses are just so massive (and fragile). Just make sure you:

  • Double-check the lip height
  • Get the glass professionally installed

Wait, it’s just much safer.
