Which fast chargers and cables are best for the new iPhone 17?

I just picked up the base iPhone 17 and honestly I am so annoyed with how picky this thing is being with my old gear. Ive been using high quality GaN chargers for years and usually a 30W brick is plenty for everything I own but this new phone is acting so weird. It barely feels like its fast charging at all and the back of the phone gets way too hot when I use my old Anker cables. I spent a good chunk of change on this thing and I really dont want to degrade the battery health in the first month because of some weird compatibility issue.

I travel a ton for work—mostly between NYC and Chicago—so I need a setup that can actually top me off in like 30 minutes before I head to a meeting. I keep hearing these rumors about the 17 series needing 45W or something special with PPS support but the info online is all over the place. I have about a $100 budget to just fix this once and for all. What specific bricks and cables are actually hitting the top speeds without the heat issues? Do I specifically need an E-marker cable now or what?

Unfortunately, older 30W bricks lack the PPS stages the 17 needs to stay cool. I had issues with my old gear too and its honestly annoying how fast these standards change. Quick tip: you need a 5A E-marker cable for the full 45W. Which specific Anker cables are you using? Some older ones struggle with the handshake. I use the Satechi 66W USB-C 3-Port GaN Wall Charger now but even thats been disappointing lately...

^ This. Also, the heat is the biggest red flag here. Seriously, do not ignore that! Heat is the absolute silent killer for lithium batteries and will wreck your capacity way faster than anything else. Quick question tho—which specific old gear are we talking about? Like, what is the exact model number on that GaN brick? I wanna check if it actually supports the specific PPS profile the 17 series is hunting for. Basically, the iPhone+17+is+smarter+than+y&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">iPhone 17 is smarter than your average bear. It wants to talk to the charger and say hey, give me exactly 4.2 volts right now instead of just taking a standard 9V blast. If the charger cant do that:

  • The phone has to convert the extra voltage itself
  • That conversion creates massive heat waste
  • Your battery health drops like a rock Since you have $100, I would grab the Satechi 45W USB-C PD GaN Wall Charger because it is incredibly stable and runs super cool. For the cable, definitely go with the Native Union Belt Cable USB-C to USB-C 100W since it is built like a tank for travel. You need that 5A rating to hit the top speeds safely!

Dude, congrats on the 17! It's super picky about PPS now, which is why your old gear is acting up. I'm obsessed with the Anker 713 Charger Nano II 45W because it's tiny for your NYC trips. You definitely need an E-marker cable tho! Grab the Anker 765 USB-C to USB-C Cable 140W Nylon and you'll hit those top speeds without the heat. It's honestly fantastic!

> the back of the phone gets way too hot In my experience, that heat happens because your old brick lacks PPS. The phone works harder to convert power, wasting energy as heat. Are you using a bulky case when you charge? tbh I've tried many setups and the Ugreen Nexode Pro 65W GaN Charger handles variable voltage stages perfectly without the heat. Grab a Satechi USB-C to USB-C Cable 100W 5A too.

Wow ok that changes things. Gonna have to rethink my approach now.

Like someone mentioned, these new iPhones are incredibly finicky about the PPS handshake. I learned this the hard way during a layover at O'Hare last month when my high-end kit barely gave me 5% in twenty minutes and made the phone feel like a toaster. Honestly, it is so disappointing that even expensive legacy gear is failing us now. I had issues with my favorite travel bricks and it basically forced me to start from scratch. I ended up putting together a DIY kit that actually hits the 45W target without the overheating mess. Here is what I am using now:

  • Spigen ArcStation Pro 45W Wall Charger is tiny and much better at managing the heat than my old GaN bricks. It is specifically designed for these PPS requirements.
  • Nomad USB-C to USB-C Cable 1.5m Kevlar is what I carry for my Chicago trips. It has the 5A E-marker chip and is basically indestructible in a laptop bag.
  • I also keep a Plugable USB-C Voltage and Amperage Meter in my bag just to verify the phone is actually pulling the right wattage. It is not as cheap as using old gear, but for under 100 bucks you can get both and finally stop worrying about your battery health. The heat is definitely the biggest worry, so getting a brick that talks to the phone correctly is non-negotiable.
