What charger should I get for my Motorola Edge 50 Ultra to actually get those crazy fast speeds? I recently moved to Chicago and managed to lose my original brick in the chaos of unpacking so now im stuck with a slow 15w charger that is driving me crazy. I looked at the Anker 737 but some forums say Moto uses a proprietary tech for the 125w charging so it might not work at full speed. I also saw some cheap ones on Amazon but they look kinda sketchy and I dont want to fry my battery. I need something under $50 by Friday since I have a business trip coming up. Does anyone know if generic PD chargers work or do I have to buy the official one?
^ This. Also, watch out for the PPS voltage range. I once grabbed a generic block and it only pulled 45w because the protocols didnt match up perfectly... super annoying. Since you're on a budget, Baseus 100W GaN5 Fast Wall Charger is usually under fifty bucks and handles high-wattage PPS well enough. TL;DR: Make sure any charger you buy explicitly lists PPS 5A support or you'll be stuck at 50W max despite what the box says.
To add to the point above: it's honestly super annoying how manufacturers lock the best speeds behind proprietary tech. I've wasted money on high-end gear that barely hits half the advertised speed on my Moto. The issue is that standard PD chargers only support fixed voltages, whereas the Edge 50 Ultra needs a very specific PPS range at high amperage to trigger that TurboPower label. If you dont have a charger that can push high amperage via PPS, you're basically stuck in the slow lane.
Unfortunately, generic PD chargers wont hit that full 125W speed since Moto uses a proprietary PPS implementation. I had issues with high-end chargers being not as good as expected, often capping at 50W. Its super frustrating. To stay under $50:
Wait really?? Thats actually super helpful. I always thought it was the other way around.
@Reply #4 - good point! Jumping in here cuz I've dealt with this proprietary charging headache for years. Before I get into the weeds, did you manage to save the original USB-C cable or did that disappear with the brick during the move? The cable matters just as much as the block for those speeds. In my experience, Moto is way better than Google or Samsung when it comes to raw charging speed, but the proprietary tech is annoying. Chicago is a wild place to move to, ngl. I lived in Lincoln Park for a bit and the winter wind was so brutal it actually killed my old phone's battery in like twenty minutes while I was waiting for the L. I had to duck into a coffee shop just to get enough juice to call an Uber, but the place was so packed I couldnt even find an outlet. I ended up just walking home in the snow and felt like my toes were gonna fall off. Anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there.
