So I just bit the bullet and pre-ordered the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and honestly I am shaking a little bit because I have never spent this much money on a phone in my entire life and it looks so fragile like a literal piece of glass that just snaps in half and I am totally lost on what I actually need to keep it alive. I am a total newbie with these folding phones like I have been using a regular flat iPhone for ten years and now I feel like I am in over my head. I have no idea where to start with accessories or if I even need them but everyone says the screen is soft so I am panicked.

I really need some advice on what to buy right away. My budget is probably around $200 for everything because the phone already broke the bank but I want to make sure it lasts at least three years. I live in Chicago and it gets freezing here so I dont know if the cold ruins the screen or if there is a case that helps with that? I keep seeing ads for different things but I dont know what is a scam and what is real.

Here is what I think I need but I dont even know the names of things:

  • a case that covers the middle part where it folds because that looks like a weak spot and I am scared of dust getting in there
  • some kind of pen because I saw people using them for notes but I dont know if any pen works or if it has to be a special Samsung one and where do you even put the pen if the phone doesnt have a hole for it
  • a screen protector for the inside but someone told me you arent supposed to touch the inside one or you ruin the warranty so I am very confused
  • maybe a stand or a grip for when I am on the train watching movies because the phone looks heavy

I am mostly using this for my job doing emails and then just entertainment while commuting. Is there a specific brand that is the best for people who are super clumsy? I drop my phone at least once a week so I need it to be basically indestructible. Sorry if this is all really basic stuff I just feel like I am gonna break it the second I take it out of the box...

Dont peel that inner screen protector or youll regret it. Id suggest these to stay safe:

Re: "Dont peel that inner screen protector or youll..." - honestly that is the golden rule. Touching the screen is fine, but never try to remove that film or you will void the warranty immediately. Since you are in Chicago, listen to this: do not unfold the phone immediately after being outside in the cold. The screen is basically a specialized plastic and it gets stiff in freezing temps. Let it reach room temp for about five minutes before you open it or you might hear a crunch.

  • Supcase Unicorn Beetle Pro Series Case for Galaxy Z Fold 7 is solid because it has hinge protection and a kickstand for the train.
  • Ringke Slim S Pen Holder can be attached to the back of almost any case since the phone doesnt have a built-in slot for the pen. Quick question, do you usually carry your phone in a pocket or a bag? Knowing that helps with recommending how bulky the hinge protection should be.

Quick question, are you gonna be running huge spreadsheets or just basic stuff? In my experience, managing the thermal load is key for screen longevity, especially in extreme temps. It kinda reminds me of my old PC building phase where I spent months researching liquid cooling loops and radiator fin density. I even ordered custom parts from overseas once. Anyway lol sorry I went off on a tangent there.

Just saw this thread and ngl, your panic reminds me of my brother when he got his first foldable. He was so paranoid he bought a tiny padded pouch just to carry it around his own living room! Im really satisfied with how my journey has gone so far tho, no complaints here. He spent weeks researching but then accidentally left his phone in the car during a polar vortex. It was such a weird ordeal.

I have tested several setups over the years and unfortunately, most of those high-end rugged cases are not as good as expected. They tend to trap dust right against the hinge which can cause permanent scratches, and it is honestly disappointing how much they charge for such a basic design flaw. If you want a more practical DIY setup, I would recommend the VRS Design Terra Guard Modern for Galaxy Z Fold 7. It provides a better seal for the hinge area which should help with the dust you are worried about. For the pen, the basic Fold Edition is a bit small for long emails. I prefer the S Pen Creator Edition for Galaxy Z Fold because it actually feels like a pen, even though you have to carry it separately. To help with the weight while you are on the train, you can stick a Moft Adhesive Phone Stand and Grip to the back of your case. The cold in Chicago is a serious concern. I have had issues with the internal adhesive getting brittle when it drops below zero. Never force the phone open if you have been standing on a train platform. Let it acclimate to room temp first. Its a bit of a chore to baby a device this expensive, but until the tech improves, thats just the reality of foldables.

I totally get the anxiety! I have been using these foldables since the very first one came out and honestly, Samsung really nailed the durability compared to some of those other brands I have tried. I used to be an Apple die-hard too until I saw the first Fold and just had to have it! I love how much screen you get for multitasking. Speaking of Chicago, I actually flew there for a tech expo a few years back and it was the first time I ever saw a deep dish pizza in person. I went to this place near the Loop and the line was like three blocks long, but I waited because I am obsessed with cheese. While I was waiting, I ended up talking to this guy who was a professional dog walker and he had like eight huskies with him! It was wild because one of them kept trying to eat my scarf. I actually missed my flight back home because the pizza took forty minutes to bake and then the traffic to OHare was a literal nightmare. I ended up staying in a tiny motel by the airport that smelled like lemon cleaner and old carpet for like twelve hours. anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there
