so I feel really dumb asking this but I’m trying to buy a new tv for my first apartment and I’m totally lost on how people know when things are actually on sale. I’m looking at this one Sony Bravia on the best buy website and it says its on sale for 799 but I have literally no idea if thats a good deal or if it was like 600 bucks last month?? is there like a secret button or a page that shows what the price used to be? I’m moving to chicago in about two weeks so I really need to get this ordered soon but I dont want to get ripped off if the price is gonna drop again in three days. my budget is strictly under 850 because of the moving costs and everything. I tried looking at the page for a while but I dont see any history thing... maybe I am just blind?

here is what I am trying to figure out:

  • is there a way to see a graph of the price or something?
  • do I need to download a special app or is it hidden on the best buy site?
  • should I wait for a specific day of the week to check back?

I really have no idea where to start with this and the best buy site just keeps showing me member deals and flash sales which makes it even more confusing and I feel like I'm missing something obvious. if anyone knows how to check this stuff please help...

In my experience, Best Buy hides their data. I once bought my current setup only to see it drop $200 later, so I started using trackers to see the true history.

Like someone mentioned, you really have to look at external tools because Best Buy isnt gonna show you their old prices. A lot of my tech tracking comes from personal trial and error, and honestly, its more of a science than a secret button. Here is how it usually works:

  • Price trackers like CamelCamelCamel or Keepa are essential. Even though those focus on Amazon, Best Buy almost always matches Amazon's pricing on TVs. If you see a huge dip on the Amazon graph from two weeks ago, Best Buy probably had that same deal.
  • Checking the specific model number is vital. Sometimes brands make a slightly different version just for one retailer, which makes it harder to compare.
  • Keeping an eye on the price match window is the best safety net. If you buy it today for 799 and it drops to 700 next week, just chat with their customer support and they will usually refund the difference to your card. This exact scenario happened when I moved last year. The TV was bought 10 days before the move-in date just to be safe. It went on sale for 50 bucks less the day the U-Haul was packed. Hopping on the support chat during a lunch break got the credit back immediately. Since you're moving to Chicago in two weeks, buying now is a decent option. If the price tanks in three days, you're still within that window anyway... usually works out fine.

Late to the party but I gotta chime in! Regarding what #1 said about "In my experience, Best Buy hides their data...."

  • I actually disagree a bit because the info is totally out there if you use the right tools! I am absolutely obsessed with price tracking tbh!! When I bought my current setup, I was super nervous about getting ripped off too. It was an amazing learning experience tho. I started using these browser extensions that literally show a price graph right on the product page... it is seriously fantastic. I saw that the big screen I wanted dipped every three weeks like clockwork! Ngl it felt like I had a superpower lol. You dont need a secret button on their site, just a solid extension to do the work for you. Love seeing those price drops happen in real time!
