I’m finally jumping from my 13 Pro Max to the 17 Pro Max. My 13 is a wreck. Battery health is sitting at 78% and the screen is covered in micro-scratches. I’ve used standard tempered glass for a decade. Usually just the $15 multi-packs. They used to be fine. Something changed recently though. I’ve gone through four different protectors in three months on my current phone. They keep chipping at the edges. I haven't even dropped it. It’s just pocket friction or something.

The 17 Pro Max is a huge investment. I need that camera and the battery life for my work. I don't want to ruin the optics with cheap glass. I’ve looked at the sapphire options. They claim higher Mohs scale ratings. Some brands promise oleophobic coatings that actually stay slick for longer than a week. I’m frustrated because every "premium" brand feels like a marketing gimmick. I’ve tried the ones with the plastic alignment frames. The glass still feels brittle. I need real impact protection. Not just scratch resistance.

Budget doesn't matter much. I’d spend $60 if it actually lasted six months. My main worry is the new display tech. I don't want any clarity issues or weird touch lag. I’ve been doing my own installs since the iPhone 4. I know the drill. No bubbles. No dust. The problem is the glass quality itself. It feels like it’s tanked lately. I'm seeing a lot of these 'privacy' versions too but they always seem to dim the screen. I'm strictly looking for the toughest clear glass available. Maybe something with reinforced edges? Most of my failures start at the bezel and spiderweb inward. I'm tired of picking glass shards out of my thumb.

> They keep chipping at the edges. I haven't even dropped it. It’s just pocket friction or something. tbh this comes up a lot on here. people keep buying those $15 bulk packs and wondering why they crack if they just look at them wrong. those cheap ones are basically just thin layers of sugar glass these days and the quality control has lowkey tanked. if you want real durability for a 17 Pro Max and youre tired of the edge chipping thing, you gotta look at stuff that actually uses ion-exchange or aluminosilicate glass. search the forum and youll see a ton of threads on this but the short answer is that ZAGG InvisibleShield Glass XTR3 is probably your best bet. it has that HexiCor tech for impact and the edges are WAY stronger than the cheap stuff. i used it on my last two phones and it actually survives pocket sand and keys without those annoying micro-scratches. if you want actual scratch resistance tho, Shellrus Sapphire Screen Protector is the only real choice. its legit sapphire so it wont scratch unless you hit it with a diamond but keep in mind it can be more brittle for drops. for pure impact and edge strength tho, Belkin UltraGlass 2 Screen Protector is the one apple sells in-store for a reason. its super thin but the process makes it way tougher against those edge chips you're seeing. honestly just skip the privacy ones like you said... they always ruin the 17's peak brightness and look grainy anyway.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I have to disagree with the UV adhesive recommendation for the 17 Pro Max. Liquid LOCA is a headache to remove and often unnecessary for modern displays that are almost entirely flat. Zagg is also overpriced for what is essentially standard glass with a high-profit margin for retailers. If edge chipping is your primary concern, you need to look at material density and edge reinforcement rather than just adhesive types.

  • Shellrus Sapphire Screen Protector: This is actual lab-grown sapphire, not sapphire-coated glass. It sits at a 9 on the Mohs scale. It is significantly harder than tempered glass and the edges are precision-milled to prevent the micro-fractures that lead to spiderwebbing. It is the most expensive option at around $60, but it solves the scratch issue entirely.
  • Flolab NanoArmour ONETIME: This uses a high-strength glass that is specifically chemically strengthened to be less brittle. It handles pocket friction and side impacts better than the bulk-pack glass you have been using.
  • Torras Diamond Shield: This is a solid choice if you want reinforced edges. It features a hardened perimeter designed to take the brunt of bezel-first impacts. The Shellrus is the best for clarity and scratch resistance. If you want the closest feel to the native screen, the sapphire is the only way to go. It does not have the dimming issues found in privacy filters and the oleophobic coating is fused rather than just sprayed on.

everyone says zagg or belkin but honestly those brands are just HUGE marketing machines. the reviews are mostly fluff and youre basically paying for a replacement warranty instead of actual glass quality. if youre tired of the edges chipping you gotta stop using the dry install protectors because they always leave a weak point. dont even bother with the plastic alignment frames.

  • edge chipping usually happens because standard protectors leave a tiny gap at the bezel where pressure builds up.
  • Whitestone Dome Glass UV Gen is lowkey the only real solution for a 17 Pro Max investment. it uses liquid LOCA adhesive that you cure with a UV light.
  • since the liquid fills the entire surface it leaves ZERO gaps at the edges for pocket grit or friction to crack the glass.
  • it feels way smoother than the sapphire coated stuff which is usually just a gimmick tbh... its the only way to get that factory screen feel without the micro-scratches.
