I just pulled the trigger on the iPhone 17 Pro Max because my old 13 Pro Max is literally falling apart, like the screen is cracked even though I had what I thought was a "good" case on it. Honestly im so fed up with these brands that claim they're rugged but then you drop it once on the sidewalk and boom, there goes $200 in repairs. So anyway im upgrading mainly for the camera and the battery life because my 13 is basically a brick at this point that needs to be plugged in every 4 hours but now im paranoid. The 17 is massive and I need a case that actually works this time. I was thinking about getting an Otterbox again but honestly they make the phone feel like a literal brick in my pocket and I hate that. My logic was maybe something slimmer but then I get scared about the camera bump because that thing is huge on the new ones. Ive looked at some of those "tough" cases on Amazon but they all look like cheap plastic trash tbh and I dont want to risk a $1200 phone on a $10 case. Does anyone have any actual recommendations for something that is super protective but doesnt feel like Im carrying a lunchbox? Money isnt really the issue I just want it to survive a drop without me having a heart attack... especially with that giant camera lens sticking out...

Building on the earlier suggestion, I’ve gotta say — Mous is fine if you’re working a desk, but look — if you’re actually worried about that massive camera bump and real-world concrete, you need something built like a heavy-duty chassis. I’ve been a mechanic for twenty-five years and I’ve seen what happens when 'slim' cases hit the shop floor — it ain't pretty. Listen, I moved over to the UAG Monarch Pro for iPhone 17 Pro Max and it’s the only thing I trust when I’m under a rig. It’s got five layers of protection — wait, I think it’s officially listed as 'hand-crafted' with carbon fiber or leather — but the real deal is the frame. It’s got these reinforced corners that act like crumple zones on a truck. You want that impact energy to go anywhere but into the glass. The camera lip on the UAG Monarch Pro for iPhone 17 Pro Max is actually deep enough so you aren't grinding those expensive lenses every time you set it down on a workbench or a flat surface. People say it looks too 'tactical' or whatever, but I’d rather have a tool that works than a pretty piece of plastic that shatters. It’s got a 25-foot drop rating — though why you’d be dropping it from a two-story roof is beyond me — but it gives you that peace of mind. It’s not as bulky as those old Otterbox lunchboxes either, fits in the side pocket of my work pants just fine. Just my experience from the grease pit.

Rarely post but I saw this and had to chime in since I spent way too many hours researching this for my own upgrade. You should definitely look into the Mous Limitless 6.0 for iPhone 17 Pro Max because it’s the gold standard for that 'not a brick' vibe. I used to be a die-hard Otterbox fan—until I realized my pockets couldn't take it anymore—and Mous uses this tech called AiroShock. It’s basically a high-impact foam—wait, no—it’s more like a specialized dampening layer that absorbs energy so the glass doesn't have to. It’s super slim but the frame is rigid enough that the phone won't pop out on impact. Plus, the raised lip on the Mous Limitless 6.0 for iPhone 17 Pro Max protects those giant lenses without adding thickness. It's the best way to avoid that $200 repair bill.
