What are the best protective cases for the iPhone 17e?

I'm finally pulling the trigger on the iPhone 17e upgrade—my old iPhone 13 is basically a paperweight at this point with a shattered back and a battery that dies by noon. Since the 17e has a slightly different form factor, I'm stressed about finding a case that actually balances protection and size. I've done some digging and keep seeing the Spigen Tough Armor recommended, but it looks kinda cheap in the hands-on videos? On the flip side, people swear by the Otterbox Defender, but that thing is a literal brick and I need this to actually fit in my pocket without looking ridiculous.

Here’s what I’m hunting for:

  • Solid drop protection (I'm clumsy, clearly)
  • Not too bulky—I want to keep the slim feel of the 17e as much as possible
  • A decent lip to protect the screen and that new camera layout
  • Budget is around $40-$50 max

I really care about the camera quality on this new model so I don't want a case that interferes with the lenses or the flash. I also saw some mentions of Mous cases being good but they're so expensive—are they actually worth the premium or is it just marketing hype? Oh, and it needs to be grippy enough that it doesn't slide off my car console. Does anyone have a specific brand they've used for the newer models that isn't just the standard stuff you find at Target?

So funny you ask this — last summer I was actually dealing with the same dilemma when I upgraded, except I was hiking near a creek and — wait, no — it was actually at a music festival when I dropped my phone right onto the gravel. I used to think those "military grade" cases were just for show, but I ended up grabbing the Caudabe Sheath for iPhone 17e because it’s surprisingly slim. It doesn't have that plasticky, cheap vibe (it's actually got this unique sandpaper-like texture) and it survived that drop without a scratch. It fits the $40 range perfectly. The lip is high enough to keep the camera glass off the table, which is huge since the 17e lenses are so prominent. It’s way better than the standard stuff you find at big-box stores if you want real grip without the brick-like feel.
