sorry if this is a dumb question but i keep hearing about people getting free money back when they buy things online and i have no idea where to start. do i have to pay for these extensions or are they free? im trying to save some cash because im shopping for a bunch of wedding outfits for my cousin's big day in chicago next month and honestly i'm totally broke lol.

basically i need something that:

  • doesnt cost anything to join
  • works at stores like macys or old navy
  • is really easy to set up because im terrible with computers

do i just install it and it does the work for me or do i have to click stuff? i dont want to accidentally download a virus or something...

Just saw this and had to jump in because I love saving money! Re: "I definitely get the concern about viruses because..." - totally agree that being cautious is smart. I've used these for years and they're amazing once you get the hang of it. Honestly, sticking to the big official stores is the best way to stay safe and ensure you actually get paid. A couple tips for your Chicago trip outfits:

  • Only download from the official Chrome Web Store.
  • Look for the little pop-up that says Activate Cash Back when you land on Macys.
  • Make sure your ad-blocker is off or it wont track your savings! Its basically free money for the wedding clothes you were gonna buy anyway. I've been using PriceDropCatch to keep an eye on some expensive skincare and it's honestly saved me a ton.

I definitely get the concern about viruses because I was in the exact same boat when I started trying to cut costs for my sisters wedding. Spending hours researching how these extensions actually work was the only way I felt safe enough to try them. Most of these tools are totally free to use, but you pay with your data, so you just have to be comfortable with that tradeoff. Here are a few things to keep in mind when you are setting this up:

  • Make sure you only download from the official Chrome Web Store to avoid clones.
  • Be careful about having multiple shopping extensions at once because they can conflict.
  • Check if your bank already has a shopping portal because that is often safer than a third party app. You might want to consider the privacy aspect before you install anything. These extensions typically require permission to read data on the sites you visit so they can detect when you are at a checkout page. It is not necessarily malicious, but it is a lot of access. From a technical standpoint, these tools are basically affiliate partners. When you click that activate button, they drop a cookie in your browser so the store knows you came from them. I actually found that using a dedicated browser just for shopping helped me feel more secure. It keeps my main passwords and work stuff separate from the tracking cookies... kinda helps me sleep better at night tbh.
