Should I use price matching or tracking for Office Depot deals?

Ive been gaming the system at Office Depot for years now using simple price matching against Amazon and Best Buy whenever I need gear for my home studio setups but lately everything is just falling apart. I went in there last Tuesday to grab that Epson EcoTank I saw online for like 280 bucks but the manager at the branch near the mall gave me this huge run-around saying they only match identical items in stock which apparently didnt apply because the SKU was slightly different for the retail version even though the specs are the exact same thing. It is so frustrating because Ive done this dozens of times before without any friction.

Now Im sitting here wondering if I should just stop trying to fight them at the register and start using one of those price tracker extensions instead but Ive heard they can be slow on the refresh rate for local inventory. Is it even worth the hassle of tracking for a few weeks to save fifty bucks or should I just keep trying different stores to find a manager who actually follows the corporate policy properly? Im on a pretty tight timeline because my current printer finally died and I have a huge client project due by Friday so I need to make a move fast. What are you guys actually finding works better these days at OD specifically?

Exactly what I was thinking

Regarding what #1 said about "Ugh, the SKU trick is such a classic..." - it is a huge pain when you are looking at what is basically the same internal hardware. I have spent way too much time comparing the Epson ET-2800 and the ET-2850 series specs lately. Most of the time the retail exclusive SKU just has a different colored bezel or maybe a slightly different control panel layout, but the MicroPiezo heat-free tech and the ink yield per bottle are exactly identical. I have been super happy with how things are going since I stopped relying on a manager's mood. If you want a smooth experience, I suggest using a Office Depot price tracker to catch the actual price drops rather than forcing a match at the register. I am really satisfied with how these tools scrape the data to find the real floor prices. For that EcoTank, I usually see it dip around 230 bucks during flash sales which totally beats that 280 match anyway. Since you are on a tight deadline, maybe check the real-time inventory on the site before driving out there. It works well and saves the gas money. If the SKU is the issue, look for the WorkForce line too... sometimes the specs are 99 percent the same but the pricing varies quite a bit. TL;DR: Tracking is way better. Buy during official sales using a tracker to avoid the different SKU run-around and get it for less than the match price anyway.

Ugh, the SKU trick is such a classic corporate move to dodge price matching. Honestly, I stopped fighting them at the register a while ago because it is just too much drama when you are in a rush. I have been super happy just switching my strategy lately. Since you have a Friday deadline, do not risk the run-around again. Here is my two cents on what works well:

  • Use the OD website for buy online, pick up in store if their own online price is lower. They basically cannot argue with their own site.
  • Check the exact model numbers on the manufacturer site first to see if there is a retail specific version. If there is, dont even bother trying to match Amazon.
  • Focus on tracking for items that arent urgent. It is way less stressful than dealing with a grumpy manager. I am usually pretty satisfied with the results when I just wait for a legit sale. By the way, I've been using PriceDropCatch to keep an eye on printer ink prices and it's saved me a ton of money so far.
