iPhone 17 vlogging tripod recommendations? Want something stable and easy to carry. Mileage is a concern when I'm out and about, so what's the most compact option?

Like someone mentioned, secure mounting really is the most important part. I have had so many issues with standard grips lately and it is just disappointing. Tried a few older mounts when I first got the 17 and none of them quite sat right because of the lens housing... nearly dropped the thing twice. It is honestly such a headache when you realize the compatibility isnt as universal as the box claims. My biggest advice is just to check the clearance for the camera bump before you buy anything.

Tbh I totally agree about the secure mounting stuff. I’m still kind of a beginner with all this, but I’ve used my gear for a long time now and the fear of my phone falling is always there. Honestly, just go with Peak Design for your stuff. You really can’t go wrong with their ecosystem. Their things feel so much more solid and reliable than the cheap plastic bits I started with. I don't know the exact technical specs or anything, but after months of use, it just feels way safer. Basically, any of their mobile tripods or mounts will do the job perfectly. Idk, do you guys think it’s worth spending more for that peace of mind? I’m just super cautious because I don’t want to be dealing with shattered glass or anything!

I've gone through way too many setups over the years and honestly, the main thing is making sure your phone doesnt take a dive onto the concrete. Stability is everything when you're moving around. To give a better recommendation tho, I've got a couple questions:

  • What's your actual budget for this?
  • Are you filming mostly while walking or do you need to set it down on uneven surfaces? I've seen people buy the lightest thing possible only for it to tip over in a light breeze. Some gear is great for wind but heavy, while the light stuff can be risky if you aren't careful. Just gotta find that balance for your specific style... its a bit of a trial and error process sometimes.

One thing people totally overlook is the actual mounting interface compatibility, which is basically the most technical part of a vlogging rig. For the iPhone 17, you really should prioritize the Arca-Swiss standard instead of relying on those basic spring-loaded plastic clips that come with cheap kits. Most pros use Arca-Swiss because it is the industry standard for quick-release systems, meaning you can swap the phone between a tripod, a slider, or a full-size rig in seconds without unscrewing anything. I suggest checking out the SmallRig Tabletop Tripod with Arca-Swiss Ball Head. It is way more stable than the flexible leg options mentioned earlier because it uses a machined aluminum ball head. You also need to verify the jaw depth of whatever clamp you buy. If youre using a thick protective case on your iPhone 17, some mounts wont even close properly or might pop off if bumped. Definitely check these resources before buying:

  • B&H Photo Video Explora blog for vlogging kit guides
  • SmallRig official website for specific mounting screw specs
  • The Phoblographer for real-world stress tests of mobile mounts Technical fitment is key! Look for a 1/4-20 threaded base for future-proofing your gear and ensure the payload capacity handles the off-center weight if you ever add external lenses or mics!!!

Over the years, I've found the Joby GorillaPod 3K kit surprisingly stable and compact. In my experience, it's reliable even with heavier phones. Consider professional lighting, though; phone cameras struggle in low light.

Forget tripods; leverage the iPhone 17's OIS. Consider a gimbal stabilizer; DJI Osmo Mobile SE offers superior stabilization for ~$100 and is significantly more compact.

For vlogging, consider Joby. Market research shows their GorillaPod line dominates portability; they're ubiquitous. Ignore the hype around newer brands - Joby's proven durability is key. I'm happy with mine; no complaints after years of abuse. Check out the GorillaPod Mobile Rig; it's around 30cm collapsed. Works well.

Before shelling out serious cash, check out used camera stores! You can often find solid, compact tripods (Manfrotto, for example) for a fraction of the price – like $20-30. iPhone 17's light, so you don't need a super heavy-duty one. Plus, used gear holds its value better if you upgrade later. Just inspect the leg locks carefully.

Hey! Forget fancy features; focus on secure mounting. Seen too many phones fly off cheap tripods – especially filming near traffic. Prioritize a REALLY stable base. Joby's GorillaPod is surprisingly grippy; I've used one since '22 with no complaints. Better safe than sorry (and shattered iPhone 17 glass!).
