iPhone 17 Pro Max is coming! What's the best gimbal for smooth video? I'm looking for something reliable and easy to use. Any recommendations?

I'd recommend the DJI Osmo Mobile 7P. DJI often finds itself at the top of the smartphone gimbal food chain; its latest and greatest isn't the exception. The DJI Osmo Mobile 7P is a true successor to the Osmo Mobile 6. Using it is super simple; it has a magnetic phone holder, it can rotate the full 360 degrees (which is rare for gimbals), and it has a really cool mirror on the back. Our reviewer tested it using the iPhone 16 Pro Max and despite it being one of the heavier smartphones now available, the gimbal was able to keep up with some aggressive movements - so it should handle the 17 Pro Max perfectly!

DJI Osmo Mobile 7P is probably your best bet. It's the most popular for a reason - works great, easy to use, and the app integration is seamless. Can't go wrong with it for the Pro Max.

Honestly, the Zhiyun Smooth 5S has been my go-to. It's a bit cheaper than the DJI options but still delivers really smooth footage. The larger clamp handles the Pro Max perfectly even with my moderately thick case on. The controls take a little getting used to, but once you dial them in, it's solid.

If you're just getting into mobile videography and don't want to drop $150+, this is a great middle-ground option.

Honestly, I am going to have to respectfully disagree with the crowd on the usual DJI or Zhiyun picks. After years of testing mobile rigs professionally, those consumer-grade gimbals always seem to hit a wall with the Pro Max weight after about a year of heavy use. If you are looking for long-term ownership and actual motor durability, just go with Hohem. Honestly, you can basically pick any of their pro-level kits and you will be much better off for a heavy device like the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

  • Motor torque is the biggest factor for longevity. If you are constantly pushing a motor to its payload limit, it will lose calibration and start jittering within months.
  • Look for brands that offer independent hardware controls so you are not reliant on a proprietary app that might stop being updated in two years.
  • Build quality on the higher-end professional brands handles heat dissipation much better during long 4K shooting sessions compared to plastic consumer units. So basically, if you want gear that actually lasts through multiple phone upgrades, skip the mainstream vlog gear and get something from Hohem instead. Their motor tech provides much more payload headroom for the heavier Pro Max frames.
