Is Office Depot price matching better than using price tracking tools?

Im honestly so tired of trying to get a fair price at the Office Depot near my place in Chicago. I need to get a new laser printer for my home office before Monday because my old one died and my budget is strictly under 250 bucks.

My logic was that I could just walk in and have them price match whatever I found on Amazon or Best Buy but the last time I tried it was a total nightmare with the manager. So I was thinking maybe I should just use those price tracking tools like Honey or CamelCamelCamel instead of dealing with the hassle in person but then I have to wait for shipping. Is it actually better to fight for the match or just let the apps handle it? The inconsistency is driving me crazy...

Just saw this while im checking my own home lab setup. Honestly, ive been pretty satisfied with how prices have stabilized on entry-level lasers lately, so you can definitely find a solid monochrome unit for under 250 bucks without the headache. Before i can really give you the best data on whether to wait for a tracker alert or fight the manager again, what kind of specs are you looking for? Like, do you need auto-duplexing or is a higher duty cycle more important for your workload? Heres a couple quick tips to help your search:

  • check the cost per page for the high-yield toner cartridges before you buy. Some cheap printers are basically just traps for expensive refills.
  • stick to brands with solid driver support, it works well and saves you from weird spooler errors. Usually i just use those tracking tools to find the lowest historical floor and then show the manager a screenshot from a major competitor... it works well enough for me most of the time!
