Finally upgraded to the iPhone 14 Pro mostly because I needed a reliable pocket camera for my upcoming Japan trip (mostly street photography, architecture, and some casual 4K video clips while walking around). I've been shooting with an old mirrorless for years, but honestly I'm just tired of carrying heavy glass everywhere.
I've been digging through YouTube and Reddit trying to figure out what gear is actually worth buying. I read a bunch of threads recommending the Moment case with their M-series lenses, but then other people say digital cropping is already good enough on the 48MP sensor and external lenses are just a gimmick now. So I'm kinda stuck.
My budget is around $150-$200 for the whole kit. I'm definitely looking for something that won't make my pockets bulge too much, but I do need a solid grip (my hands are a bit clumsy) and maybe a tiny tripod that fits in a jacket pocket.
Oh wait, forgot to mention filters — are ND filters actually necessary for phone video or is that overkill for a beginner mobile setup?
What are the actual must-have camera accessories for the 14 Pro that you guys use daily without regretting the purchase?
Oh man this is my absolute jam right here — I've literally tested every mobile photography gadget on the market. For a Japan trip where you want a solid grip without bulk, grab the ShiftCam SnapGrip Creator Kit around $120 (wait, no — check sales, sometimes it's lower) because it doubles as a power bank and feels amazing in hand. Pair that with a tiny Manfrotto Pixi Mini Tripod around $25 and you're golden. Anyway, bottom line is skip the extra lenses and just use the native 48MP sensor.
Building on the earlier suggestion, skip the extra glass entirely and look at protection plus stabilization—grab a Peak Design Everyday Case for the slim profile and mounting ecosystem, and pair it with a Joby Gorillapod 1K if you need to wrap it around poles or rails in crowded Tokyo streets. If you really want a dedicated grip though, the ShiftCam SnapGrip mentioned above beats out bulkier cages any day, though it does add some weight to your jacket pocket.
Man I feel this pain so much, literally dealing with the exact same gear overload right now... idkkk what to even buy anymore tbh.
Rarely post but I totally agree with the ShiftCam recommendation. Add a cheap CPL filter for glare off Tokyo windows — total game changer for under twenty bucks.
