Can two people edit the same Amazon cart at the same time?

So Ive been managing the procurement stuff for our small youth center in Chicago for about four years now. Im pretty familiar with how Amazon handles shared accounts, sub-accounts, and general cart behavior. Normally I just have staff email me their requests or drop links in Slack, then I compile everything and place one big order.

Today was different though. We are setting up for our annual summer fundraiser event coming up in mid-July, with a budget of roughly $3,000 for decorations, sound equipment, catering disposables, all that good stuff. To save time, my colleague and I decided to log into our main admin Prime account at the exact same time from our own laptops across the room. We figured we could just search for stuff simultaneously and throw everything into the main cart together to speed things up.

Except it turned into a complete mess within 10 minutes. I would add a 10-pack of sharpies, and then two minutes later it would disappear from the cart entirely. Then she added a projector screen, and suddenly it showed up in my cart twice. We tried refreshing the page, clearing browser cache, logging out and back in, but it kept overriding what the other person just did. It honestly felt like a classic race condition where whichever browser pushed an update last just wiped out the other person session changes.

I know Amazon backend infrastructure relies heavily on eventual consistency for scalability, but I figured active cart sessions on a single account would have some basic real-time sync or at least append-only behavior so items dont get deleted mid-session.

Has anyone else run into this when trying to build a cart at the same time on one account? Is Amazon's standard cart just strictly designed for single-session use, or is there a specific setting or workflow we should be using like shared business lists to avoid this collision?

Yeah, standard Amazon carts definitely dont support multi-user live editing. I learned this the hard way a couple years ago ordering event gear with a coworker. We thought we were being clever using the same admin login on two laptops, but it turned into total chaos. Here is basically what happens when you try it:

  • Active cart sessions overwrite each other based on whoever refreshed last
  • Quantities double up when both people click add around the same time
  • Items silently drop off right before you hit purchase Honestly, it is way too risky when you are managing a $3,000 budget like that. Ever since that nightmare, I strictly have staff dump everything into a shared Wish List first. Then one single person moves the list into the cart. Much safer that way.

Unfortunately, this exact issue has frustrated me for years when handling purchasing for big events. It is so disappointing that a platform as massive as Amazon still handles active cart sessions with crude state overwrites instead of real-time server merges. When two people edit simultaneously, the system pushes full payload updates that trigger immediate headaches:

  • Last-write-wins API calls instantly nuke items added moments before
  • Stale browser caches create ghost duplicates that wreck your budget totals
  • Huge amounts of wasted labor spent re-auditing quantities against master lists Honestly, having to constantly babysit the cart to ensure items dont vanish is incredibly exhausting when working under tight event deadlines.

In my experience, standard Amazon carts just use basic session overwrites rather than live sync, so two people on one login will always clash. I think Amazon Business shared lists are what you actually need here. IIRC someone told me lists handle concurrent items fine because they append instead of syncing active cart states. Might be worth trying that workflow next time.
