So I finally pulled the trigger on the OnePlus Open and I'm freaking out a little bit because I have this big trip to Tokyo coming up in three weeks and I really want to get some good cinematic shots. The cameras on this thing are insane but holding it is so awkward especially when its unfolded. Ive been looking at the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 since everyone says its the king but then I saw some reddit threads saying the clamp is too small for foldables or that the weight balance is totally off and it might burn out the motors. Then people mention the Insta360 Flow because it has a better weight limit but I dont know if the software plays nice with OxygenOS or if the hinge gets in the way.

I need to figure this out fast because I dont want to be fumbling with a setup that doesnt work while Im trying to explore. Here is what Im looking for:

  • Budget is like $200-250 max for everything
  • Must be able to handle the phone while its fully open because I want that big screen for monitoring
  • Need a decent ND filter kit if that even exists for this weird circular camera bump
  • Portable enough to shove in a small sling bag

Is there a specific gimbal that actually works with this thing without having to like, sand down the grips or something? I saw some guy use a counterweight but that sounds like a huge pain and I just want something that works out of the box. Does anyone actually use a gimbal with their Open or is it just too heavy for these consumer ones...

Unfortunately, those clip-on filters usually block the sensors... kinda annoying. Are you using a case? I found the Hohem iSteady M6 Kit 3-Axis Smartphone Gimbal handles the weight better than DJI.

I've been really happy using my Open unfolded with the Insta360 Flow AI-Powered Gimbal Stabilizer. Honestly, it works well because the clamp is slightly wider than the DJI version and it handles the weight without much fuss. No complaints about OxygenOS compatibility either, it basically just works out of the box. I also tested the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 3-Axis Stabilizer but the motors felt a bit strained when I had the screen fully open. The Flow just feels more robust for heavy foldables. For the ND filters, I found a solid workaround. I use the NEEWER 52mm Phone Lens Filter Clip with some basic 52mm filters. It fits over that huge camera bump without needing a special case. The whole setup stays well under your $250 limit and fits in a small sling bag easily.

> Must be able to handle the phone while its fully open ^ This. Also, in my experience, most phone gimbals struggle with the Opens weight. I've tried many and the Zhiyun Crane M2S 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal is way safer since it handles heavier gear easily. Another reliable one is the FeiyuTech SCORP-Mini 2 3-Axis Gimbal. Check the <a href=" https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw= OnePlus+Open+Photography+gro&_sacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p4624852.m570.l1311&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&siteid=0&campid=5337998953&customid=22&toolid=10001&mkevt=1" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">OnePlus Open Photography groups on Facebook... they have massive spreadsheets for what filters fit that camera bump without blocking sensors. Better safe than sorry tho!

Jumping in here because I actually disagree with the idea that clip-on filters are too annoying! Ive had amazing results using the Neewer 52mm Phone Filter Clip Set for those cinematic Tokyo vibes. It fits that camera bump perfectly if you are careful. For the gimbal, the Zhiyun Smooth 5S 3-Axis Smartphone Gimbal is fantastic because the motors are absolute beasts. It handles the unfolded weight way better than the DJI! Such an amazing setup.
