im trying to save up for a new TV since my old one literally just died on me last night, my budget is around 400 bucks max and ive been staring at this one model on walmart that keeps fluctuating in price. i read on some reddit thread that price tracker extensions are totally fine and just save your history, but then i saw another post claiming they steal your login info and track all your web traffic. i really cant afford to get my account hacked right now especially with the holidays coming up. does anyone actually know if these extensions are safe or am i just paranoid...
> price tracker extensions are totally fine and just save your history Unfortunately, many of them scrape far more DOM data than necessary. I had issues with permission bloat. Just use CamelCamelCamel or privacy-focused scripts instead.
To add to the point above: permission bloat is real. In my experience testing dozens of scrapers, you can easily bypass extensions by using open-source price history APIs instead.
^ This. Also, I unfortunately had to learn the hard way about how invasive these things can get when I was hunting for PC parts last year. Installed a seemingly reputable tracker and watched my network traffic spike because the background script was constantly pinging third-party ad servers. It was absolute garbage behavior. When you look at the permissions they demand upon installation, read them carefully. They frequently request access to read and change all your data on websites you visit, which means they can technically read session cookies and sensitive form inputs. That is a massive security risk, especially when you have payment methods saved to your retail accounts. For a tight four hundred dollar TV budget, you really shouldn't risk your account security over a few bucks. Instead of installing random browser extensions, just use manual methods or check the Wayback Machine if you want historical data. Another solid trick is adding the item to your cart and just watching it from your phone app since notifications there rarely require sketchy browser permissions. Stay safe and dont let a discount tracker compromise your personal info right before the holidays.
