I am in a major time crunch. My new remote consulting contract starts this coming Monday and I still need to get my home office sorted out. I have exactly a $300 budget left for a new desk chair, some high-yield ink cartridges, and basic supplies, and Office Depot is the only place nearby in north Austin that has the chair I want in stock today. But their prices are kinda high unless you use coupons, and their coupon policy is making my head spin. I need to get the absolute most savings out of this and I am torn between a few different strategies.
Option A is to do one big transaction. I have a 20% off coupon for one regular priced item (for the chair), a $20 off $100 coupon I got in my email, and about $35 in rewards certificate points. Can I actually stack all three of these at the register, or will the system reject them? I've heard some people say you can stack a percentage coupon with a dollar-off coupon if one is a manufacturer coupon, but these are both store coupons I think.
Option B is to split everything into two separate transactions. Do the chair with the 20% off coupon first, get the rewards from that purchase instantly (do they print instantly?), and then use those rewards plus the $20 off $100 coupon on the ink and office supplies.
Or Option C, I try to price match the chair to a cheaper price I saw on Amazon, but then I dont think I can use any coupons on it at all.
I am leaning toward Option B but I dont know if the rewards points post to my account fast enough to use them five minutes later in the same trip. Has anyone successfully stacked these recently? I need to go to the store in like two hours so any quick advice on how their register system actually handles this would be amazing.
Since youre in North Austin, Id honestly skip Office Depot. I did my office setup last year and ended up at a state surplus store nearby. Got an amazing steel desk for like forty bucks, super satisfied with it. But then I got distracted buying old vintage license plates they had in a bin... ended up spending two hours sorting through them to find my birth year. Anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there.
TL;DR: Option B is risky because OD rewards databases have a massive sync lag, but Option C is amazing if you can pull it off! I think the store POS system only batches rewards overnight, so you wont see those points in your account five minutes later. Not 100% sure but thats how their database api used to run. Honestly, price matching is the way to go. I actually tracked the chair I wanted using PriceDropCatch and got a sick price match deal last month. Just show them the Amazon page at the register! You might not get to use coupons on the chair itself, but then you can do a second transaction for the ink and supplies using the $20 off $100 coupon. Works like a charm!
Oh man, I love optimizing register math! Here is the technical breakdown of how the Office Depot POS system works. Option A is a no-go. The register instantly rejects stacking a store %-off coupon with a store $-off coupon because they share the same coupon class in their database. Option B wont work either because rewards points definitely do not post instantly. It takes at least 24-48 hours for the system to process them! Go with a hybrid strategy. Price match the chair to Amazon at the register first. That usually saves way more than the 20% coupon anyway. Then, do a second transaction for the ink and supplies. Use the $20 off $100 coupon and your $35 rewards certificates on that second transaction since rewards count as cash. It is a fantastic way to maximize that $300 budget!
