So Im trying to figure out what old vintage pocket watches are actually selling for right now before I list a few pieces I inherited from my grandpa living here in Ohio, but Im running into a brick wall with eBay's search tools. I saw some YouTube video saying you just gotta check the completed items box on the left sidebar, but when I log into my account on my laptop, that option is literally gone or greyed out half the time unless I have an active store subscription which I definitely dont wanna pay for since Im just a casual seller trying to clear out some clutter on a zero dollar budget. My logic was that eBay would want everyone to see true market value so items move faster, but apparently they hide it behind paywalls now or keep changing the layout just to annoy us. I also tried using some free third party archive sites like WorthPoint alternatives, but they either want a credit card upfront for a free trial or only show modern tech stuff instead of 1920s Elgin gold watches. I just want a simple way to look up actual sold prices from the last 90 days without getting tricked into a monthly subscription. Am I missing some hidden button or did they completely kill the free historical data search...
Regarding what #1 said about Ebay actually still lets you see sold stuff..., it really is free if you know the URL trick. I had the same headache last month selling my dads old railroad watches. Ngl, their UI is a mess right now.
@Reply #2 - good point! That URL hack saves a lot of headaches since ebay keeps moving the filters around every week. Honestly, dealing with vintage pocket watches without paying for subscriptions is a pain these days. WorthPoint used to be decent, but they lock everything behind paywalls now. If you want a realistic idea of what those pieces from Ohio are worth without getting scammed by sneaky trial signups, try doing this:
Ebay actually still lets you see sold stuff for free, but they keep moving the button around just to annoy people. I would suggest using your phone browser instead of the laptop, or just go to the advanced search page directly. Check the box for completed listings and sold listings there. Be careful with vintage pocket watches tho because lots of people list crazy high prices that never actually sell. Make sure you are filtering by sold items in green, not just completed items which includes the stuff that didnt sell. Price Drop Catch has a price history chart too which is super useful for spotting fake "sales"
