Is the Office Depot rewards program worth joining for discounts?

So I've been running a small consulting business from my home office in Chicago for about four years now, and I usually manage my overhead pretty tightly. Normally I just buy my shipping supplies and paper wherever it's cheapest online, but I need to upgrade my office setup this month—looking at a new desk chair and some bulk toner, probably gonna spend around $350.

I was looking at the Office Depot OfficeMax rewards program because my logic was I could buy the chair, rack up the points, and then use the rewards certificate to offset the toner cost next month. I've used tons of retail loyalty programs before so I know how to stack coupons and points, but looking at their terms, I ran into some weird stuff.

The 2% back seems standard, but then I saw that the rewards certificates expire really fast, like within 60 days of issue? And apparently they don't even issue them until you hit a certain threshold, but some forums say they auto-issue every month. I got super confused by their payout schedule.

Has anyone actually saved real money with this, or do the rewards just expire before you can even use them? I don't want to sign up and get spammed with emails if the return on investment is basically zero...

In my experience, the Office Depot program isn't worth the hassle. The rewards expire too quickly and the payout thresholds are annoying. Here is how I handle it:

  • Skip the rewards program entirely to avoid the spam.
  • Buy only when things are actually on sale. I started using PriceDropCatch a few months back to track prices on chairs and toner, and it saves me way more than their 2% back ever did.

To add to the point above: unfortunately, their tracking system is laggy. Not as good as expected. Feel free to ping me for setup help, but try these:

The math on their base 2% tier for a $350 spend only yields $7 in rewards. Its rarely worth the effort unless you hit VIP status at $500 annual spend.

  • You need a $3 minimum balance for monthly auto-payout.
  • Certificates expire at the end of the next calendar month after issue.
  • Use a Office Depot price tracker to buy when base prices drop rather than chasing points.
