Is there a specific schedule for Kohl's markdown days?

Honestly I am so incredibly frustrated with trying to figure out Kohls pricing. I am trying to get my kids some clothes for school starting in two weeks, and my budget is super tight this year, like literally 150 dollars total for both of them. I went to my local store here in Ohio last Thursday and bought some shirts and jeans, and then I went back on Saturday just to look for shoes and saw half the stuff I just bought was suddenly marked down way lower. I felt so sick to my stomach because I could have saved like forty bucks.

So I was thinking there has to be some kind of pattern to this. My logic was that they probably do markdowns on Sunday nights or Monday mornings to prep for the week, but then why did the prices change between Thursday and Saturday? I asked one of the cashiers and she just shrugged and said its random, but I dont buy that. There has to be a system.

I read somewhere online that different departments get marked down on different days of the week, like home goods on Tuesday and apparel on Wednesday, but that post was from like three years ago and I dont know if they changed everything recently.

Does anyone who works there or shops there religiously know the actual schedule? Like is there a specific day of the week or time of the month when they do the yellow clearance tags? I really need to go back and get the rest of their clothes but I am genuinely anxious about buying stuff only for it to go on clearance the next morning...

Jumping in. Are you seeing the digital electronic price tags on the shelves at your Ohio store, or are they still using the paper ones? In my experience, stores with digital tags update prices automatically overnight on Wednesdays, while the physical yellow clearance stickers are printed between the 1st and 15th. Let me know which system your store has and I can give you the exact breakdown.

In my experience shopping at Kohls over the last ten years, you can definitely crack their system once you know what to look for. First off, dont stress too much about the stuff you just bought because they have a 14-day price adjustment policy. You can take your receipt back to the customer service desk and they will refund you the difference. I do this all the time when I get caught in a price drop. Here is the actual markdown schedule and strategy I have figured out over the years:

  • Major markdowns and new clearance cycles almost always drop on the second and fourth Friday of the month. This explains why the prices changed so drastically between your Thursday and Saturday visits.
  • Look at the electronic price tags on the shelves. If you see a small square in the upper right corner of the digital screen, that means the item has hit its lowest price and is officially clearance.
  • The best time of day to hunt is Saturday morning. The employees do most of the physical tag switching late Friday night, so Saturday morning is when you get the freshest selection. Try going back for that price adjustment first to get your forty bucks back, then look for those Friday night drops. Let me know if you need help figuring out their coupon stacking rules too, because that is a whole other way to save.
