So I finally bit the bullet and switched from my old S21 Ultra because the battery was basically a brick and the camera shutter lag was driving me crazy tbh. Im loving the OnePlus Open so far its literally the best screen ive used but im lowkey terrified of dropping it because of the hinge mechanism and how thin that inner display feels. I want something that actually protects it without making it feel like a literal brick in my pocket or messing with the factory screen protector... price isnt really an issue if it works well. Are there any specific cases that protect the hinge properly without being too bulky or should I just stick with the one in the box?

Rarely post but—re: "I have tested every major case for this..."—I spent way too much before realizing the Foluu OnePlus Open Slim Fit Case is cheap—actually, wait—the free included one is honestly perfect.

I have tested every major case for this model. This is exactly my thing.

  • Spigen Tough Armor Pro OnePlus Open: Sliding hinge cover. It adds 4.2mm of thickness but prevents debris buildup.
  • Nillkin Frosted Shield Prop OnePlus Open: Slim profile. The camera kickstand is 1.5mm thick but leaves the hinge exposed.
  • Poetic Spartan Series OnePlus Open: Rugged build. Anyway, bottom line is the Spigen provides the best balance.

  • Most high-end cases are just rebranded plastic with a 300% markup.
  • Nillkin Frosted Shield Prop for OnePlus Open is usually $25. It has a camera cover that doubles as a kickstand and adds minimal bulk.
  • Poetic Spartan Series for OnePlus Open offers the same rugged protection as the VRS for half the cost.
  • Ignore the paid hype for $80 cases. These budget options use the same materials.

^ This. Also, I'm no expert but I just looked into this last week because I had the same anxiety about the hinge mechanism. The stock case is decent for basic scratch protection, but it offers zero impact resistance for the spine. I spent a few nights reading teardowns to see how these hinges actually fail during drops. Most cases with full hinge protection use a bulky spring-loaded flap. This usually adds about 6mm to 8mm to the total width of the device when folded. Here is what my research turned up for specific models:

  • VRS Design Terra Guard Modern for OnePlus Open: This uses a reinforced spring hinge. It is probably the most rugged option available, but it definitely makes the phone feel like a literal brick.
  • Araree Nukin for OnePlus Open: This is a slim clear polycarbonate case. It uses a non-mechanical hinge bridge that is much thinner than the Spigen or VRS designs. It prevents scuffs without the massive side bulge.
  • Supcase Unicorn Beetle PRO for OnePlus Open: This is a full-body setup with a built-in screen protector. It is heavy, but it's the only one I found that seals the front display entirely. The main issue with hinge covers is that they can trap pocket lint and grit against the spine. This causes micro-abrasions on the metal over time. If you buy a case with a hinge flap, you have to take it off and wipe the interior every few days. I also found that cases using adhesive strips are better because they prevent the thin front frame from sliding and scratching the bezel.
