Ugh so Ive been rocking my 13 Pro for years and honestly the battery is just totally toast at this point, like it barely lasts until 3pm. My logic was to jump to the 17 Pro for the camera upgrades, but Im legit terrified of dropping it since the edges are so thin. My budget is flexible but I dont want a brick. I need something that wont mess with the MagSafe alignment because I use that car mount daily. Ive looked at Otterbox but they feel kinda bulky, and the silicone ones always pick up so much lint... what are you guys actually using for real drop protection that isnt hideous?

Look, listen. Ive been working in the shop for 25 years and I dont have time for gear that fails. If you want protection without turning your phone into a brick, stop looking at the cheap plastic junk. You need something that actually dissipates kinetic energy. I run the OtterBox Symmetry Series Slim Case on my own gear and it does the job without the bulk of those heavy duty tanks. It keeps the MagSafe alignment solid so it wont slide off your car mount while youre hitting potholes. Another option if you want something that feels legit is the Pitaka MagEZ Case 5 Aramid Fiber. It is thin as paper but tougher than nails. Listen, the secret to longevity is keeping the screen off the concrete. Put a tempered glass protector on it immediately. Dont cheap out. If you see bubbles, you did it wrong. Get a case with a raised lip around the lens array or that fancy camera upgrade is gonna be useless the second you drop it on a gravel floor. Keep it simple. Dont overthink it. Just buy quality once and quit worrying about the lint.

Re: "Look, jumping in here because I've seen too..."

  • I totally get the anxiety, these glass backs are basically ticking time bombs. If you want serious protection without the bulk, just make sure you look at the Caudabe Synthesis iPhone 17 Pro Case. It feels great in the hand and handles drops really well. Double-check your screen protector install too, I'd recommend getting it professionally done if you're not sure you can align it perfectly. Better safe than sorry...

Look, jumping in here because I've seen too many guys wreck their screens. Listen, stop overthinking the bulk. If you want protection, you need material that absorbs shock, not just a thin shell. Go with Spigen or UAG—they've been around forever and hold up in the shop. Check out the teardown videos on iFixit if you want to see how these devices are built inside, it'll make you respect the internals more.
